The most impressive thing is how a Golf with 780bhp and a sub 10 second 1/4 mile looks and sounds so boring.
I was scrolling to the bottom of the page to post the same thing, pretty much word for word.

Whatever the car is, it's a bloody good achievement in my opinion, especially from a 2.0 4 pot.
Maybe I'm due a whoosh parrot, but jap 2ltr 4 pots have been running in the 9s for quite some time. This MR2 was running 9s without the benefit of 4WD or sophisticated clutch/gearbox trickery over 10 years ago https://youtu.be/P6fB73OAwko I'm sure there will have been Evos and Imprezas going even faster.
No whoosh required.

I know the japs have been pushing mad HP for a while, but then, why don't those get the recognition?

But anyway, obviously motor bikes are much better at it.

Theres plenty of Cosworth 2.0 4 pots ( in Road Tune) that drive about pushing well over 600bhp, this is hardly anything extra-ordinary these days.

Modern turbo/manifold tech is amazing really

As above there were novas , astras and escorts being built in sheds in the 80s and 90s that were not too far off this pace and could beat any exotica at the time

Then the Japs in the 90s who did it reliably and not in a shed

I remember an S13 200SX running 680bhp back in 2005, not bad from a 1.8. Not particularly reliable though IIRC.

The Golf R Mk7 stock engine and gearbox will handle 550-600bhp and 450-500 lbft, when mapped properly. A couple dozen of them running happily in the wild across the UK for the past 2 years.

Taking it a little further to 750-800bhp and 500-600 lbft with some strengthened components (pistons, clutch, etc.) is not a major leap forward. These are going to last much longer than you think. Would expect to see 20-30k miles without any major problems, which is about the same kind of reliability you see with a McLaren or Ferrari at the same power level.

It's quite funny actually in terms of entertainment - you don't think it can get better and next morning...boom, another Yipper classic.

I kind of like the idea of really, really fast hatches like this but sort of got to thinking a MK7 Golf GTI is probably all the Golf I would ever need, I ad a go in a lads at work and it was a brilliant all rounder, not sure if I would need to go faster, weirdly, my normal "must have the best, fastest, most expensive version" has abandoned me and I find the GTI more appealing.

Threads like this quickly identify the wally crowd on PH. I'm not particularly in love with the Golf R, but you'd have to be some kind of cynic/retard to be unimpressed with that performance.
Someone makes a 5-seat hatchback run the quarter faster than the world's quickest hypercars, while being road-legal and looking largely stock on the outside, and we get this:

Not in the 80s, there weren't.

And all the other 4cyl drag cars sounded great?

I'd sooner do 20 full bore quarter mile drag runs on a '14 then ride it round Europe and have a shed hatchback for practicality than blow 50k on a golf that will need expensive mending every five minutes.
But this guy can do both, without needing to dress like a Power Ranger or carry a Donor Card.

Otherwise, just like any other turbo car, who cares? Congratulations, you upped the boost.
What else do you propose to hit that sort of performance?

I would still rather have a LaFerrari, P1, 918, Veyron or Aventador
Probably the stupidest post of 2017.

It's odd that PH wks itself silly over Red Victor, which is barely road-legal and totally unusable. Yet Red Victor, the ground-up, specialist-built drag car, was only running in the 7s a couple of years back. £50k is a fraction of the build cost, and gets you a car that is only 2s slower up the strip, and can be driven home without the need for an HGV licence.

Er, there was.

Plenty of rallycross cars with BDT's were pumping out WELL over 600 bhp in the 80's, Most of which were Non WORKS efforts and privateer built. Not quite the same type of car but nonetheless, 2.0 4 bangers have been making silly power for 30 plus years, even in production car format ( Ford RS200 EVO )

The Haldex stuff won't like it for long. Rear diffs and gearboxes have blown running far less power than that, but they only need 1 run to convince the gullible it's a tried, tested and daily reliable package.
Gearboxes are rated by torque rather than power. The point stands though, the transmission is liable to be a weak point.

Ex-factory the motor produces 400nm.
God knows what it's doing when it's up at circa 800bhp - but if it's not revving any higher than normal then 800nm is a reasonable ballpark estimate.

Good fking luck with that...
Yes, yes, I know, and just for you, the VW O2E DQ500 gearbox is rated at 600nm. These tuners usually just throw a clutch pack in, increase the clamping force....and hope for the best. To be fair, the DSG boxes are very strong and can handle a ton of grunt. For how long, nobody knows. As I said, the Haldex stuff will let go first.

Impressive but look at it writhing it's way up the strip on drag radials. Not really a street car is it? I'll take the modern trickery thanks....and full interior....and street tyres.

No. They almost all sound completely soulless...which is one reason some of us have next to no interest in 4-pot hatches above a certain price level, or as a fun car.

Tried it myself with a Mini JCW. The exhaust has a good go at livening-up the 4-banger with it's pops and bangs (still sounds like a sewing machine when you walk around the front though) but it seems that pushing 210+ BHP out of a 1.6 turbo was a bit much. - I've had turbo and timing chain tensioner failure. Going back to a 6+ cylinder NA lump for the next fun car I buy.

I don't follow you at all and don't understand the cynic/retard thing. Straight line performance has stopped impressing me a long time ago.

It's because it's a Golf. If it was a PH darling car, they'd all be beating themselves off under their desks over it.

Whilst not wanting to own it, it's interesting to see the engineering and what can be extracted
