It's an excellent car. No spare wheel is about the only downside.
Did you test the range on batteries ?

W124 keep them coming, very enjoyable reads.

We had a D3 HSE, great car. Unassuming yet capable and luxurious at the same time.

Looked at a D5, just a dogs dinner design wise and somehow claustrophobic on the inside.

JLR have really dropped the ball IMO.

Coincidentally, I visited the Midlands regional HQ of National Grid a couple of weeks ago as we were pricing some new work for them. As my colleague an I were walking to the site offices, we passed a number of car charging points at which were parked some of these GTE things. Both of us are petrolheads, and we stopped in our tracks and agreed that we'd never heard of such a thing as a Golf GTE (nor the BMW 330e, of which there were a number of also parked up at the charging points).

A very enjoyable review again by W124, BTW

For a company that seems to do so much wrong according to the experts on here, its incredible that the factories are running full hammer to keep up with demand laugh

You won't get more than 25. 20 is what I'd assume. But you can charge it on the move and if you are doing over 80/90 miles it'll be fully charged when you park it. Very useful, oddly enough.

The problem for me is no spare wheel. I've been let down by the gunk/compressor solution too many times.

That aside - the GTE is really very good. It lacks the alacrity of the GTI but it counters by being incredibly relaxing to drive. It's not slow either.

I don't follow you. Are you saying that because JLR sell loads of cars, then those cars must be good?

By that argument, Justin Bieber is a stone-cold genius.

That has become their business model if the D5 is anything to go by. Fair play to them, it's what I'd do. And it's fine if the cars are still good under all the Brent - as the Range Rover, for example is. It's still brilliant.

But the D5 is not. Take the badges off and you could be in anything. It's just boring.
I was a little surprised by the D5 interior. Higher spec cars are much closer to RR territory than I expected after D4. How would you explain the difference between RR being good and D5 being terrible?

It has to be more than styling (I'm still expecting JLR to do a clever refresh and fix the D5) and I don't understand the tailgate flap thing. But I'm guessing you're talking something far more substantial and fundamental than quirky styling and some dodgy features?

It's weird. The whole car just doesn't work. It's just not enjoyable to drive, in a way that can't really be quantified.

The old car offered a colossal dose of character and practicality. The D5 is just another big SUV which feels way behind the market - as a road based thing you'd be insane to choose on over an XC90.

OP, keep these going - read all 3 and I really like 'em!

Funny how people are getting huffy - the guy is not being paid, we are not watching adverts to view his content, he is not being schmoozed by manufactures with free loan cars, he doesn't have to feel their wrath when he calls something as rubbish - how refreshing!!

From what I can work out he's a normal bloke, like all of us, who's job seats him in many cars. He then gives his opinions which we are free to read or not. And we can agree or disagree.

But the great thing is, his opinion is his and gained through first hand experience - and so by definition it can't be wrong.

Quite interesting to see some of the comments on the thread which try to knock the OP and his opinions. As another said, they are his opinions, gained by sitting in the seats and driving them for a purpose, and getting direct comparisons with other vehicles. You or I may not agree with what he says, or the way he says it, there are some things I don't necessarily agree with, but this is a nation and website of relative free speech. Some of the cars he has driven I have too, others not and will refrain from comment specifically on those.

So if you want to disagree with someone, then please do so, and back it up with, this is why I disagree, not just the smarmy smartass empty play the man not the ball stuff we are seeing. If you don't do that then as far as I'm concerned you will be consigned to the thick kids table.

Having spent an entire day doing back to back driving of the Discovery 4 and 5 (on and off road) and on road in the Audi, Mercedes and Volvo equivalent, the OP is talking pretentious bks.

To say that the new Disco just doesn't work is ludicrous.

No. I don't work for a LR dealer.

I think you are wrong. You think I am wrong. I think the D5 is very poor. You like it.

That's all that's going on here.

As an aside. I do a LOT of miles in these cars. Just to put it in perspective I drove from Oxfordshire to Inverness in an an XC60 and back in an XC90 the other day. I also have to demo them so know how they work inside out.

The OP took the time to explain the rationale that led to his conclusions.

All you've done is use insulting language.

So from a neutral bystanders's perspective, my opinion is that you've contributed nothing useful to the topic.
