RE: New Aston Martin Vantage pics
Discussion
Have to disagree coppice - I think the DB9 was a master stroke in design. It instantly made the DB7 look ugly and is a shape that can never be mistaken for another Aston in my eyes.
The Vantage, to me at least, took the DB9 architecture and used it in a perfectly propositioned, sportier body.
I don't personally like the shape (the rear profile specifically) of the DB11 but I'm hopeful that the new Vantage will evolve as well from that as the current one did from the DB9.

If ever a post illustrated how beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this is it .http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

Hahahah come onnnnn! You can't deny it, that blacked out manual v8 screamer with that huge rear wing is as cool as it gets! Sorry, but the GT8 takes the most wonderfully perfect and pure design and tries as much as it can to metamorphosize it into a dogs dinner of bolt on chintz.
Time and a place for wings and swoops, usually affixed to a Lamborghini or such like. And I love them for that drama. But leave Astons alone please.

I fully respect the fact that you dig it, but I'd be absolutely embarrassed to be seen in it. Horrible.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

.Sadly, for me, the new car's off-the-shelf AMG engine is an utter travesty. An Aston deserves an Aston engine, and using someone else's off-the-shelf engine is an absolute deal-breaker for me.
The current V8 in the V8 Vantage is a modified AJ-V8 Jag engine, the old V12 in the DB7 and DB9 was two V6 Ford engines joined at the hip, the DB7 was a Jag !Aston Martin have relied on off the shelf parts and other manufacturers' engines and facilities as building blocks for their cars for years - e.g.
"The DB7, known internally as the NPX project, was made mostly with resources from Jaguar and had the financial backing of the Ford Motor Company, owner of Aston Martin from 1988 to 2007. The DB7's platform is an evolution of the Jaguar XJS's, though with many changes. The styling started life as the still-born Jaguar F type (XJ41 – coupe / XJ42 – convertible) designed by Keith Helfet. Ford cancelled this car and the general design was grafted onto an XJS platform. The styling received modest changes by Ian Callum so that it looked like an Aston Martin."
The AMG engine in the DB11 and the next Vantage is straight off-the-shelf, simply bought in from AMG. The intake, exhaust and electronics are tweaked, and they've reshaped the (wet) sump. That's it -- there is NO CHANGE to the engine itself, so in no way is it an Aston engine. They don't try to claim otherwise, only that it will feel and sound "like an Aston engine." Which makes it clear that it isn't an Aston engine.
In contrast: The current V8 is "based" on the Jaguar AJ-V8, but thoroughly re-engineered. So thoroughly that the result is an engine that has it's own, bespoke, unique to Aston block, crankshaft, bearings, rods, pistons, rings, heads, cams, valves, etc. -- the entire engine is unique to Aston. It's also built by Aston -- by Aston employees in an Aston-only section of the Ford engine facility in Germany.
To Ford's immense credit, once the DB7 saved the company, Ford recognized that Aston Martins should have bespoke Aston platforms and bespoke Aston engines. They were right.

That was then, this is now and whilst you and a few other people might not want to buy this car because of 'AMG power', there will still be many (myself included) who as buyers simply don't care - this car will be a sales hit no matter your oft-stated opinion regarding the engine choice.Aston obviously no longer have the backing of the deep pockets of Ford and therefore probably don't have the resources to make their own bespoke V8 engine in addition to their bespoke V12. You give the impression you'd prefer them to not make and sell the Vantage at all so what would you have them do instead given we know what limited options they have?
If you really must have an bespoke-engined Aston, there's always a DB11.
I'm looking forward to seeing this in the metal as many others are but I can't be alone in hoping it doesn't have the face of either the DB10 (truly awful - those slit headlights just didn't work at all) or the DB11 which has a different but not better lights. It's like they've forgotten what made DB9 and Vantage look "right" - they had a simplicity and elegance that is missing from DB11. Aston's don't need to be aggressive but the current designs seem focussed on hardening up the looks which simply isn't my preferred direction.
