Bangernomic opinions needed!
How often do you change the oil on yours.
I've read everything from every 3k miles to never done one in 5 years.
My banger, a 55 plate Jazz, has done 8k mlies since I bought it without an oil change so far for reference.
Thoughts?

If you think it can last a few years (55 plate jazz should!?) then maybe annually just after the mot? You could inspect and just do it when it's really black, or not do it at all and trust to luck.

Still running a 52 plate pre-facelift Multipla that cost £700 3½ years ago.
Runs on the devil's fuel, but other than that, it's as good as gold. Clutch went a year or so ago, but other than that, only consumables (which might also include clutches!) have been replaced.

I don't service it as much as repair things when they break..

just get oil from eurocar parts when it's on offer and change it twice a year.

I last had oil changed in my cars about 10 years ago. And serviced, for that matter. Obviously, I've not had any decent cars. The last time I paid for stuff to be done beyond getting it through an MOT or working again (and FYI none of it was related to oil not being changed) was for the CLK 55 which I got rid of in about 2008.

Note that all my cars since have ended up being scrapped or traded in for scrap.

Twice a year? Once every 2 years more like....

I usually did mine at around 10,000 miles, however long that took, but couldnt tell you for 1 second if they would have gone for years without an oil change, or if doing so stopped them going bang 500 miles further on the old oil. Suspect I did it as much because I enjoyed caring for the oily bits as any other reason, and it was easy.

I'm up at 143k on my polo bluemotion

I stuck a new turbo on at 136k and change the oil approx every 6k

Given how cheap you can get oil and a filter for it makes sense

In answer to the thread's original question, the answer (for me, at least) is a resounding YES! thumbup

Thanks for the posts about oil changes.
Might be time for one before my mileage increases over spring/summer then.

Cheap oil certainly is having a positive effect. I remember in ye olden days when dealers were often the main source for overpriced oil, filters and service equipment. Now ECP/CarParts4Less and even the main supermarkets are a decent source. We're turning American in our attitude to frequent lubing!

I do my own but also use national tyres who do it for 30 quid depending on car, use a discount code as well.

Just had a look on National Tyres website.
£39 inc VAT for oil and filter change, garage 1.5 miles from home.
Thought I'd do my own, but at that price it hardly seems worth it.

Search for a voucher code should get a fiver off. They will usually advise on other work, just nod. Change air filter, pollen etc full service for fifty quid.

Change the oil to keep it in good shape. Would cost a lot more to buy another one.

I hadn't realised just how cheap somewhere like National would be to be honest.
I'll search out a voucher code and get it booked in.
It's having 2 new tyres next week as well, might even have to wash it too.
Very un-banger like. hehe

Those that know me best usually ask "who did you steal that from ?" Whenever I acquired another vehicle .
amongst all the dross out there are still some real bargains , you just have to know how to filter through it .
I only fix whats broken or worn out and only spend more than £75 if it increases the value of the car . I do most of my own work but do have excellent contacts in the local motor trade as I have been in and out of that trade for most of my life . Most of my cars have been sold on for at least what I paid for them after using them for a couple of years .

I've been an avid follower of bangernomics, I hate the idea of finance and hate depreciation. Current fleet is a 2002 London Taxi, 54 plate Volvo S60 D5, MK1 Mazda MX-5 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9. move of them cost over £1,250. The jeep is the only one serviced at a garage, the others I do at home. A sucker you stick down the dipstick to pull the oil out to make life easy and a can of silicon grease for the doors etc All are in perfect running order.

Oil & filter change is one thing not to compromise on too much. Tesco sell GTX at £12 for 4 litres some days (half their normal price). Filter is about £6 from Halfords or £12 from a main dealer with the sump plug washer.
Well worth it once a year for each car.

The Daihatsu Shed I bought 2 years ago is starting to cost money at my el-cheapo Romanian mechanic: £20 drive belt and £120 new eggs-haust last year, and now £80 for a full service. To be honest if it wasn't for the elderly oil filter leaking I wouldn't have serviced it yet. That's £220 in maintenance for 16k/2years of motoring. Front brakes will be good for another 12k/year, tyres are ok but I may splash out £50 for a pair of 155/65/13 ditchies:

Do I go for the £26 Radars:
https://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-finder/s=1/summer/t=...

Or in a Jeremy Clarkson-esque manner, go for the £29 Powertracs as they have POWER in their name! biggrin

It's strange looking for four tyres that are the same price as a premium 18" Runflat for the Clubman!
