We should start a directory, recommending banger-nomics Friendly mechanics/garages/body shops across the uk based on town or city.

A good mechanic (someone who repairs rather than just replaces parts based on fault codes) is a rare thing these days.
If we start to recommend people could someone organise it by area so people
Could look up by their local area? Or does this go against forum Rules?

The Daihatsu Shed I bought 2 years ago is starting to cost money at my el-cheapo Romanian mechanic: £20 drive belt and £120 new eggs-haust last year, and now £80 for a full service. To be honest if it wasn't for the elderly oil filter leaking I wouldn't have serviced it yet. That's £220 in maintenance for 16k/2years of motoring. Front brakes will be good for another 12k/year, tyres are ok but I may splash out £50 for a pair of 155/65/13 ditchies:

Do I go for the £26 Radars:
https://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-finder/s=1/summer/t=...

Or in a Jeremy Clarkson-esque manner, go for the £29 Powertracs as they have POWER in their name! biggrin

It's strange looking for four tyres that are the same price as a premium 18" Runflat for the Clubman!
On the subject of tyres, when cracking on with Bangernomics, it pays to choose a car with as popular a tyre size as possible. For example, my £950 Jag X-Type (see link below) is shod with 205/55/R16 tyres all round, which is such a common size, it makes the cast of TOWIE look like royalty. laugh

Even premium tyres are sensibly priced for the Jaaaaaaag. thumbup

Shameless plug for my X-Type's Reader's Cars thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

You are absolutely correct. There's been postings on HotUKDeals lately of premium 205/55/16 Goodyear EfficientGrips and the like for around 50 squid delivered on Amazon.

My other car (L322 Rangie) runs 20" wheels, so to smoke around in something with cheap-to-buy tyres is rather refreshing. Not that I'll need to buy any boots in the near future - my Jag's wearing matching Pirelli Cinturato P7s (with decent tread) all round. wink

I'm basking in the smugness while I can... The Jag will throw up a bill or two in the near future, of that I am sure! laugh

I'm looking at getting a cheap car. I want another E39 as I love them, but am I mad? Or is there anything else worth looking at?

Budget is £1,500. Running costs aren't too important, but 30MPG around town would be nice. Something with a bit of poke would be nice as well.

So how are people who've posted previously getting on with their 'bangers?'

My previous '03 Yaris did 39k faultless miles over 2 years, but someone reversed out in front of me and killed it off.
The current '05 Honda Jazz Auto keeps on chugging along, just passed 50k miles, and except a few quid on consumables it has been pretty cheap too.
My track record isn't good as i buy them , get bored and flog them before there due another mot.

Over 2 years i've had saab 9-5 aero , nissan primera , bmw 325ci and now the puma .

None of them have broke down , the aero had a oil light on when it idled , bmw had a load of rust but they all worked , the primera was so slow as fk and the puma apart from having a seized brake caliper is doing fine .

I've had three or four Renault 5s and 12s, a 11, 18 and 19, a Extra van and a Citroen Berlingo spread over the last 30 odd years as daily Sheds and work cars. All bought for not much money and all have been run well north of 100k miles on cheap pattern parts, supermaket oil and budget tyres 'till either they dropped or I couldn't be arsed to fix them.

Apart from the odd flat battery or puncture in all that time I've had just three breakdowns.

Current Shed is a Honda Jazz. Absolutely nothing to see here either... smile

Posted on the reply before your question about oil changes.

No change.

My banger's clutch is starting to slip (auto Honda Jazz), with a good bit of tyre noise on hill starts!
I'm a bit surprised as its only done 52k, though the previous owner was an old bloke so could be down to his driving.
Been quoted c.£350 for a new one fitted, but might leave it for now.
Thoughts?
It wouldn't be bangernomics without a slightly embarrassing fault or noise would it? hehe

Leave it. It's all part of the car's character.

My 9-3's suspension creaks louder with every speed bump I go over. The MOT flagged up nothing though so I reckon I'm fine for another year.

For someone fairly new to this (not had a car in the 'bangernomics' price range since my first car), what's the best way to seek out a bargain?

I've had a brief look at AutoTrader and eBay, and even for something quite rotten, you're looking at £1000. Where are all the £200 bargains?!
