RE: Shed of the Week: Renault Clio
Discussion
Too many Alfas, wash your mouth out! I've had a few Alfa sheds including a 156 V6 that I have driven for most days in the past three years, bought for the princely sum of £425! Driving home last night, sound of the Busso and that badge on the steering wheel. To me that is what sheds are all about, driving a car that costs the same as a couple of tyres on a new German barge but makes you feel good.
Over priced !
This sort of thing pops up on local sales sites at under £500 .
Those that don't get it should think bangernomics .
Old school hatchback, very predictable handling, not enough power to get into trouble .
Drive it down the back lanes like you stole it just for the comedy value . See how high you can back wheels off the ground in the corners .

I was actually admiring one of these in the supermarket car park only yesterday. Really well proportioned little car, and quite a rare sight on the roads today.
I remember driving one back in the day and finding the pedal position very odd, but that was back in the mid 90s and my memory may be playing tricks.
Nice little car though.

A good shed is about:
- being a lot of car for the money
- putting a smile on your face
- being in half-decent condition, meaning that it won't ruin you
This little Clio ticks all of these boxes. For that price a low mileage example with good bodywork is a bargain. That 1.4 engine is quite fizzy and quicker than you'd expect. I've driven this exact spec along the back roads of Sussex and was surprised how much fun it is. Yes, you do have to manage the car's momentum with only 80 bhp, but that's part of its charm.
Yes, I'm partial as I've owned several Clios, but for me this is a top shed!

I had to double take on this.
I had a N reg 1.4RT in this colour, was quite a nice little car tbf.
Was fully spec out for a 19, who just came from a corsa B with wind up windows ha.
Was only a stop gap, brought it for £650? Fixed the electric windows, general tidy up and sold it for £820 to the first viewer.

I had genuinely forgotten what the mk1 Clio looked like, probably because my sister had one and I was trying to block out the memories of having to mend whatever had broken on it that week.
On the flipside I do remember it was a nippy little thing and handled quite well but the gearchange was awful.
I wouldn't give anywhere near the asking price though, that's the sort of car I would give a couple of hundred quid for if (and it would have to be a bloody big IF) I needed something that was mot-ed and drove as a (very short!) stop gap.

Doesn't this fail on the first point? - being a lot of car for the money
- putting a smile on your face
- being in half-decent condition, meaning that it won't ruin you
Unless, based on the colour of the rear off-side door, you are getting a lot of several different cars for your money.
Had a 1.9 diesel one of these back when I used to switch regularly to make some pocket money. Didn't work on that one as it ended up needing a head gasket!
A few years later our Eunos V-Spec needed to go as little Miss Pistonbroker was on the way. I bought an R-reg 1.2 one of these off my brother-in-law. It was low miles and had belonged to a friend of mine prior to that. All I remember is it seemed to serve me OK but I jumped into a Mk3 Golf GTI 8v asap.
Poor SOTW.
