I never planned to buy an estate car. I ended up getting one as I couldn't find a decent 328 coupe.

I'm glad I did. These things are bloody useful. I'm moving house...again. King size mattress to move? With a bit of washing line, no problem. smile

First proper road trip after I bought it in 2012 was to Berlin. Now on 194k, still soldiering on.

Isle of Mull last November.

What makes your Estate/Touring/Avant/etc great? What have they transported you never thought possible? Epic road trips? (Un)intented purchase? Pics? driving

Mk3 Mondeo 2.0 petrol estate. Bought for £593.28 nearly 3 years ago with 80000 on it. Paint hanging off the rear bumper. Rusty bit, mudflap dropped off, and now a disconcerting rattle.

Still though, with roof bars fitted, and a towbar, I can move a ridiculous amount of stuff, and I don't care if I scratch it. I'm wondering if I can secure an 8x4 on the roof. If so I'll never need another vehicle!

It drives pretty well too!

I secretly think estates and specifically BMW ones look better than the saloons. My E34 525i is over 20 years old and a bit sheddy but all that space plus hydraulic self levelling suspension makes it an ideal workhorse for towing and carrying duties

We've had our chipped 2.4T V70 for nearly 12 years and it's been brilliant.
A proper workhorse if ever there was one.
I'd love a Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake though.

2006 Bmw 3 series wagon.
Owned it for about 8 years now, that's a personal record for me.
So useful and whilst it keeps running I'll hang onto it.
I'd have another one definitely when it gives up.

Another vote here for generally preferring the looks of modern estates to saloons.

I had an MG ZT-T 260, followed for a glum few years by an S-Max whilst the kids were small, but I've now gone back to an estate again, in the shape of a Mercedes C350e estate.

Ok, so I can't fit as much in it as I could in the S-Max, but it can just about manage everything for a two week camping trip for five, which is pretty much all I'll ever need, and in every other way it's just so much better!

When my S-Max reached the end of its company car term, I already knew I wanted a nice estate, and also that I wanted a hybrid.

Surprisingly, the combination of the above two requirements basically meant a choice of one in the Merc! I don't really understand why the BMW 330e is saloon only.

The 6.2 C63 Estate is pretty much my ideal car. If only I could live with the fuel bills doing nearly 20k a year!

Same goes for the Audi A4 and A6. The saloons look awkward and oddly proportioned to my eyes, but the estate models look just right.

The engine. Definately the engine. V8 Twin Turbo FTW. Capable of doing all the estatey type stuff, but as fast accelerating and powerful as I'd ever want on a public road.

Because dogs.

Needed to get something cheap to lug the mutts around and found this locally. Less than £1500 and I love it.

It's filthy and smells but it's the comfiest of my cars. 1.8T automatic - it's not very quick (at all). It is a lovely comfortable place to spend time, the symphony stereo system is better than the expensive one in my M3 and compared to both the BMW and my trooper, its cost practically nothing to run in 2 years.

Fantastic car.

I prefer that generation of Audi shape over the newer stuff.

The shape has grown on my to be fair. I keep having to resist the urge to modify it. It's for the dogs not me! They'd never appreciate it anyway.
My only issue with it is the headlights - they are woeful.

Only if the aircon is borked.
