That's the way to do it.

I know, the towbar bike carrier is wonky - that's spirited driving for you :-) It's blooming hard to put right when laden, so we left it like that until we could unload it.

Note the different font in top picture on the reg - we lost the number plate on st roads in Poland, had to order one quickly, and got one with a "Eastern Europe style" font smile

To be fair, majority of the roads in Poland were fine, but the bad ones were REALLY bad.

Thats absolutely brilliant... and I have often wanted to do this in mine, but please share how the actual experience was.

Was it freezing cold? too small? not conducive to a decent nights sleep etc etc...

Well, as you can probably tell, it wasn't summer (April last year). The car temp display showed -6, but I had a 4 season sleeping bag, so was warm enough, the main issue I had was it was still too light, no curtains etc... That said, I still got 7 hours sleep I think.

Make sure you have a good roll mat or air bed. In the end, I slept with my head at the boot end, slightly more room that way (need it all at 6ft 4") The floor also goes totally flat, which I don't think happens in all cars.

I tend to do this quite a bit, so making some modifications which include insulation cut to size for the rear and side windows I can stick on, should be able to use suction pads.

Because AWD estate car biggrin

It's a 3.0r Spec B so 245bhp flat 6 and all of the toys.

Big enough for me at 6ft 3in to camp on the back (not tried it yet) but I can't see it being any different to camping in a tent, just a metal and glass tent.

I had one of those a few years back, it was mental in the winter.
Lovely thing smile
VED and fuel consumption saw it off frown
a 2.5T JDM one might be a good shout though!

I think the challenge for me is that i dont have a fully flat boot once the seats are down... I could likely mitigate some of the issue by raising the other end with duvet or something.

at a mere 6ft, I think I almost am obliged to try this...

Yeah it's £47 a month VED and I'm getting about 25mpg at the moment, worth it though! I'm only doing 5k miles a year so it's not too wallet heavy.

Also - I have no kids, no dogs, it's just me in the car 98% of the time. But still, estate car. biggrin

?? Bit judgemental. What's all this "because" business these days, I see it being used quite alot and not sure where it comes from (goodness I sound old!).

I do prefer the looks of the estate / touring versions of many cars, including the 335i. I set out to find one, but simply couldn't find one.
"Because" Mike its true
Most people on this site dont have any money but they talk like they do . Yes some people post pictures of their cars and are able to back up what they are saying but they are rare and it reflects the amount of expensive cars ratio to normal cars on the road.

The financing of cars in this country is a complete joke . People who cant afford to buy a car are getting cars they cant afford .This site is the worst site on the internet for encouraging this .
A lot of young new petrolheads joining this site buy into the fact that you must have an expensive car or your not a proper car person .So instead of running a car they can afford after a couple of months of reading about fast cars and easy finace on this site they then go and put the financial rope around their neck .

Some people on this site are very rich others on the this site are older and wiser and have seen a bit of the world . Many of the others are easily influence by advertising and social pressure to have something they really cant afford
We all noticed this week even SHED is getting above his station .He can only afford 1K but is now spending £1500 £500 of whitch he does not have ( This reflects this site )

People enjoy threads like this estate car thread because these people are the real petrolheads ,The real motoring people

The jealousy shines through strong with this post. wink

I love my V70 (1999), in the volvo garage the other day drooling over the new V90......but it is like all the other estates with a sloping rear end, this takes away so much packing space.....I mentioned this to the sales man, and he said that Volvo changed the "box" shape rear to the "sporty" look to compete with the BMW's, AUDI, Merc types, and since they have their market share has improved ......

Looks over practical.....looks like it works.

When my V70 eventually goes to car heaven, will get another estate, would love the V90, but like the "5" series estates, "E" class also....... those who have never owned one miss out, slept in mine, carried numerous trips to the dump, gets 5 /7 people in it (dwarfs in the boot), tows stuff, and if I die before it goes the family have been instructed that the coffin and me have my last ride in it......unless they can get the coffin upright in the MX5!

Always fancied getting an old estate to try car camping. Your setup looks decent.

Picked this up recently although The jury is still out if I actually like it or not , I’m already frustrated with nearly starting the thing in reverse several times, rolleyes

These still make a great looking estate IMO.

Lovely wheels, too.

I miss my Aero saloon and would definitely go for one of the above one presented itself.

With metallic paint and upgraded speakers it is £500 short of £40,000.

Seems a lot of money to me?

The reason for not wanting a fast family car is

Just saw this, very nice. We can only have one car, so our family estate with 600l boot has the same power and weight as the above car, and handles quite nicely too. After this daddy did his mods at least. And at least with a manual, a rare car too. Nobody seems to notice it, suits me just fine as a family transporter.

Best car I've ever owned. Debadged by a previous owner. Hilarious. Bought it for £11,000 and sold it two years later for £12,000. Had to unfortunately. Worth a lot now.

It was first registered with a cherished number so I bought M22 ADU for it. That's an RS2 joke.

Bringing this thread back from the dead, it’s made me realise there’s so many more cool estate cars to choose from.

Wondering what the best car would be for £1200 now...

If by cool/best you mean fastest, I reckon £1200 would have you in a 2.8T Vauxhall Vectra estate. Either 230 or 255bhp in standard fettle, with a gearbox-munching 300bhp a mere remap away. I had one and still miss it for sheer sleeper quality. Someone has presumably sorted the gearbox and 4 years after I traded it in I am still following its MOT history...

If by cool you mean actually cool... I don't think you'll get a genuinely cool estate for £1200 smile

ETA sorry, looks like they start at £2k now... It sounds bizarre but the Vauxhall Vectra estate is an appreciating classic biglaugh
