Quite odd, if you read the linked article you'll see what I mean...

A 1.6TDi will end up badged a "30 TDi", a 1.0TFSi will end up as a "30 TFSi". The ubiquitous 2.0TDi will become either a 35 or 40 TDi depending on state of tune.

Audi have been using this model designation system in India for some years now, probably other markets as well, so I guess they are just standardising.

Why are there gaps in the groupings? If they release a car with 100kw it is neither a 30 or a 35...

Does this mean no future Audi will have less than 107bhp?

I can understand the rationale - as powertrains evolve it's not about swept capacity... but this just boils my OCD blood:

I can't weigh up why they couldn't make the "bandings" more sensible, by simply dividing BHP by ten then rounding (so 127bhp becomes 13, 324bhp becomes 32 etc).

They could even round those figures to the nearest multiple of 5 (127bhp becomes 15, 324bhp becomes 30) - that way, as an added bonus you motivate 2.0TDi customers to plump for the 180bhp rather than the 148bhp variant, so that they get the coveted "20" badge instead of the paupers' "15".

I have never understood the need to advertise the size of the engine and/or model trim on the back of a car. I guess it's to show you can afford the extra £40 a month.

Why not just airbrush last years P45 on the back and be done with it?

I seem to recall fiats having output in kilowatts under the indicator repeats - although that may not have been in the U.K.

They used BHP in the UK, presumably kilowatts would have confused us Imperial throwback Brits! biggrin - my 1994 Punto 1.1 had a "55" badge under the side repeater, my 2008 Bravo JTD had "150T" badging in the same position.

Similar to what BMW and Mercedes have already done.

Low spec will be debadged, high spec will have S Line plastered all over it.

Meh.

The badge wars continue.

Here I was thinking Mercedes and BMW were being ridiculous with stuff like the C450 and 330i, but then Audi come out with this. I can only assume the next 3 Series will have the 350i as a base model if they're planning to keep up. laugh

Obviously preparing for the electric age. But what a mess. Disjointed and unmemorable.

Makes perfect sense as a concept, but the gaps seem a bit odd. Are they declaring their future powertrain line-up performance that far in advance?

Engine size is about to become irrelevant...

Not too dissimilar to JLR's 20d, 25d, 30d, and 20t, 25t, 30t and 35t. They don't directly relate to engine size or power really.

Yup. My merc is debaged because it's base spec.
My Yaris on the other hand has badges because it's the mighty 1.3.
