The reality is that £35k puts you in a 280 L&K estate with adaptive dampers, panoramic sunroof, front and rear parking sensors + rear camera, front and rear heated seats, adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane assist, auto-masking adaptive xenon headlights, tri-zone climate, wave-your-foot-to-open boot and even ventilated seats.

Not so mean after all. How much would a similar-sized Audi/BMW cost with all that?
To answer my own question:
£58,835 for an A6 of as near-equivalent spec as I can make it - http://uk.audi.com/A94UBEUC
(Although it's a diesel, power is near-identical.)

Should be getting my L&K version in a few weeks, was impressed on the test drive.
And mine a week on Monday.

I see it as a modern day Volvo T5 which I had back in the day. Haven't even sat in one. Could be a revelation.

Must say I'm in love with superbs. Been in 2 models 1 old and 1 brand new in the last couple of days and the room they have in the back is amazing. I'm 6"4 and they are incredibly comfy.

These have been on my radar to replace my 335i next year.

Not sure about auto only though and dropping to 4 cylinders but looking forward to a test drive.

I'd go with that assessment - I have a 280 L&K Hatch here in Luxembourg, and when looking around I compared with an A6 of equivalent spec. Although there is a subtle difference in specs between UK and Luxembourg, so a few less things to add on / options not available in UK - I kept coming up against a 20k Euro difference.

I do think the Sportline is priced/pitched a little strangely in the range though, given it is an option pack to a lower spec model, if you add a few things that the "sporty" model should really have, like the DCC, adaptive cruise, adaptive Xenons etc, it is hard to not look at the L&K where near enough everything (at least in Luxembourg) is standard. Think a dedicated model, like a vRS, would work better than it being just an options pack.

With regards to some of the comments about an Octavia vRS, I had one prior to my Superb and there is a big difference, in my opinion, between the two cars. The Superb just seems more solid and better put together, as well as with the 4x4 a much better ground coverer overall, if perhaps not quite as chuckable. I haven't driven the latest facelift Octavia 245 vRS though so this might have closed the gap. Worth a back to back test between Octavia and Superb if you are unsure.

Surely there can be no car on the planet driven with more of an I have something to prove attitude than Superb VRS's. Every one I see has a middle aged bloke in it, showing us all his car is really really fast. They're not unpleasing to the eye, and appear practical, but the image...
agree.

also a car cant be cool when the vast majority of women will assume you are a cheapskate either. i know its a good car btw.

Probably more, but big BMWs and Audis depreciate so unless new is an absolute requirement - appreciate apples and pears somewhat here - 35k is a big budget for a nice 1 year old BMW or Audi with spec. I currently have a Skoda and I like them but with that sort of money available I'd struggle to spend it on another Skoda.
But a 1 year old Superb isn't going to be £35k so is there any point to the comparison at all?

Which is great news if you're a single guy, as you can then avoid the pretentious gold-diggers whos priority is ensuring the other Mummies see her dropping precious little Frogmella off at the school in her 'premium' suv - "oh, yours is a 16 plate, mine's is a 17 plate, I'm clearly better than you"

Being uncool (as far as the masses are concerned), is the new cool.

Just to help some folks in here, the only type of women that think a car is cool, and that the car has some influence on whether they f*** you should be avoided at all costs.

They won't last.

The Superb 280 isn't the fastest car I've ever driven, but so far it's the only one where someone's followed me into a car park just to ask 'What engine's in that? You utterly fking destroyed me away from that roundabout on the bypass'. The comment came from someone who was driving a MK2 Focus ST.

I love the element of surprise. Nobody suspects that it's anywhere near as quick as it is.

Anyone who judges things based solely on badges rather than substance is a class idiot. Women, men, makes no difference.

Women won't think your BMW 530i is "cool" either.

God, what a depressing way to live your life if you worry about stuff like that. You don't buy a large estate car for it to be "cool".

It looks incredible in black with the black grille and other Sportline bits.

I think this is going to be the natural upgrade from my MK3 Octavia VRS. Also a very good car, but we found ourselves struggling for space on a recent camping expedition. More space, more power and 4wd looks to be a very appealing upgrade!
I was thinking the same but the Superb just doesnt handle as well as the Octavia.

you are missing my point. driving a skoda will project an image, to the majority of younger women, that you are tight. this isnt about gold diggers or getting a shag on the sole basis that you might own an audi. horses for courses.
