It looks incredible in black with the black grille and other Sportline bits.

I think this is going to be the natural upgrade from my MK3 Octavia VRS. Also a very good car, but we found ourselves struggling for space on a recent camping expedition. More space, more power and 4wd looks to be a very appealing upgrade!
I was thinking the same but the Superb just doesnt handle as well as the Octavia.
To be fair, if you get one with the DCC chassis, if it's in Sport mode there's not a lot of difference. At the time, my wife had an Octavia vRS (albeit the diesel one) and I'd say the difference was too small to notice.

The Superb's party trick though was the fact that once you got on a motorway, you could put it in Comfort mode and have one of the waftiest, floatiest barges you've ever driven.

Women won't think your BMW 530i is "cool" either.

God, what a depressing way to live your life if you worry about stuff like that.
Agreed. Skoda is the new Saab, driven by the discerning dentist. I do miss Saabs.

Just to help some folks in here, the only type of women that think a car is cool, and that the car has some influence on whether they f*** you should be avoided at all costs.

They won't last.
you are missing my point. driving a skoda will project an image, to the majority of younger women, that you are tight. this isnt about gold diggers or getting a shag on the sole basis that you might own an audi. horses for courses.
I am not missing your point. If a woman (of any age) considers you tight, because you drive a car with a certain badge, then she's an idiot. Just like any male.

I wouldn't be surprised if that placed 90% of women under 30 in the idiot category then.

As I said, I like the car and most car people will appreciate it for what it is but outside of the wife and kids arena (and car nerds) it really won't be cool at all.

Is there such a thing as a "cool" car with an internal combustion engine these days?

The fact taht it makes noa ttempt to be trendy is one of the things which appears to me about the Skoda brand.

Surely there can be no car on the planet driven with more of an I have something to prove attitude than Superb VRS's.* Every one I see has a middle aged bloke in it, showing us all his car is really really fast. They're not unpleasing to the eye, and appear practical, but the image...

- * or whatever they are calling 'hot' Skoda Superb's at the moment (added to assist those unable to understand the gist of the comment)

Think you may have answered our own question?
I'd respectfully suggest that the reason you see middle-aged men in them may be because they have the responsibilities of a wife+2.4,whereas the young guns can easily do with a much smaller bolide, perhaps a Seat Ibiza FR etc, or Leon FR.
Mr Middle-Aged appreciates the extra space and versatility whereas a younger owner might just appreciate it for its ability to go cramping (local colloquialism) with his one-night stand.
And perhaps the bean counters at workplaces who are responsible for managing a vehicle fleet for Mr Middle-Ageds employers have looked at the lease deals and residuals / maintenance, and decided that the Sportline makes better sense than the A6 / 530 alternative.

You can't, but that's not the point. You can't in an A6 or a 5-series Touring either.
To to be fair, nearly any SUV that you can fit 4/5 people into the back off doesn't carry them all in what I would call comfort, and one would need to send Parker on ahead with the luggage.
I spent years being an MT (marque tart) although have had several Octavia vRSs of estate flavour in mk1 & 2 guises.
And in 16mths, given the funds, wether on drip or otherwise, I think I'll be upgrading my current Octy estate to one of these.

As a previous poster remarked, bigger Skodas seen to have evolved into what Saabs once were, and Volvos used to be. The Superb is the the closest modern thing to a spiritual successor of the Saab 9-5 HOT. My Mk3 Octavia vRs feels less like the MK2 it replaced and a bit more like a friend's Volvo 850 I once drove (but better handling, if without the nice 5-pot noise).

The Superb feels a posher place to sit than the Octavia, and significantly not any worse than a BMW 5 or an Audi A6, in my opinion. I can't tell you how one drives because I just had a poke around while my car was in for a service, but it feels like a decently screwed together thing. I have no need for something so big, but if I have more kids it'd be on my list. Width might be a problem for some people more than length though; I'm not sure it'd get through some width restrictors around my area without tucking the mirrors in and very careful placement.

I still can't believe some posters worry about what women think of the badge on their car- if a woman won't go out with you because you bought the wrong car, then in my opinion you should celebrate a lucky escape from the wrong relationship. Non-car people really, really, really don't give a monkeys, and the lack of a BMW badge means you'll be let out at roundabouts within a fortnight. wink

I had a 2014 Octavia and have driven and been driven in a 2016 Superb.

In my mind, they're beey decent cars but certainly a step down in quality from an Audi or BMW.

EFA.

You need to worry a lot less about what other people think of you.

By all means buy a different car if you prefer it- it's your money after all. But if you're spending good money buying cars because of the opinion of people who most likely won't care, then I genuinely feel sorry for you.

I like it. I don't like the whole 'Sportline' thing though. Add it to S-Line, R-Line, ST-Line and GT-Line in the category of most hackneyed trim level name.

The Superb is a decent car but I'd take the Mondeo in Vignale form every time but I can understand that the Ford badge doesn't work for others in which case the Skoda works, as for being better built than a VW I'd say they're built the same but people have a slightly lower expectations of the Skoda product therefore it feels better built.

Or an often overlooked example is the VXR Insignia they're around the same price point but hard to find.

I wouldn't say my Octavia's better built than a Golf- it feels similar, having had a decent poke around both a Mk3 Octavia and a Mk7 Golf. The Superb feels a notch above both in quality to sit in, but then I've not sat in a modern Passat... perhaps they're similarly a notch above a Golf?

The Octavia, Golf, Superb and Passat are all based on the same platform so will share the huge majority of mechanical components. There may be minor differences in assembly quality but I can't see there being a significant difference in build quality in the mechanical sense of the term. I dare say the Passat has a squishier dashboard.

^ hehe

I guess I asked for that reply, Kambites. smile

Since I just sat in a stationary Superb, all I can go on is whether panel good look OK and whether the interior's nice, really. Perhaps I'm a sticker for squishy plastics now I've turned middle aged.

Test drove all of these.
The Superb is much, much better packaged than the Mondeo - bags more legroom as a result. Interior quality also better, plus (subjective) think they look nicer. Throttle response on the Mondeo was better, but that's about it really.

The Insignia just wasn't really in the same league for interior space, quality or value for money for the kit you get. Plus the VXR stuff is a bit, well, gaudy. I dunno, maybe the very latest one is better, but I massively preferred the Superb. The number of awards and group tests it's won, seems I'm not alone. They are a bit boring (even in 280 form) but they are understated and very competent.
