I bought the last SEAT Leon Cupra that featured in Shed of the Week and that too had the door locks problem but all sorted and went VERY well.

Miss that car, but it had to go.

Would be my pick again out of these two

I've had both of these in one form or another.

Much easier to find a good Seat than E46 for sensible money these days. Mine was a bit of a snotter though. Was the yellow and paint was either peeling or faded just about everywhere. It's a nice enough car but that 1.8T engine is so dull. It's effective enough but utterly souless. Steering and handling much better than the Mk4 Golf GTi that shared its underpinnings but still a bit average. And the interior is cheap and nasty. Not a car I hated but I don't look back on it with any particular nostalgia.

E46's are nice but so hard to find decent ones now. They rust everywhere and so many have been neglected. My suspicion is that the 'minor, easily fixed, bodywork blemishes' on this one might turn out to be anything but minor. Manual boxes are pretty awful on these too. Could be worth a punt though, they're still a nice car when you find a looked after one.

BMW for me, prefer cloth to leather and a manual straight six to boot. Also seems the four doors escape the full council treatment and abuse the two doors and convertibles get.

BMW for me (obvs). Looks reasonably honest, original interior and proper OEM alloys.

Mate had an E46 323i (early one) the drivers door handle had to be nearly wrenched off to get in and the throttle felt like you were trying to push a pallet of bricks down. Straight six is lovely though.

It's worth mentioning that the Shed logic is a cheap and interesting car purchase, with the intention of spending minimal on the car, other than vital and routine maintenance and servicing. It's not about keeping it in perfect, cosmetic condition.

As long as it's mechanically sound, as it appears this particular example is, then it's a case of running it until it dies, drastically fails an MOT or becomes uneconomical to repair in the interim.

YES, I am also the proud owner of an 03 Leon Cupra, does that mean I'm a shed motorer now? Good car, fully relate to all the points listed, the door seals did leak but aren't difficult to replace, my clutch has finally let go after 92k, the top mounts got replaced ages ago and I also have a rear door that only unlocks when its in the humour. Only tip mechanically wise would be to make sure it pulls smoothly, the 1.8T engine is famous for boost leaks that can be caused by just about anything.

eta, oh and my aircon also needs regassing! Hmm, has someone nicked my car and painted it black?

And that's the sole reason I'll never have something from the VAG stable, we had an Octavia estate that got this fault and I simply couldn't get rid of it. When the car was involved in a minor bang and was written off I cheered. Up to that point, despite a full dealer service history I'd almost put it above my forester turbo....

Shame really, but even the main dealer didn't want to try and fix it.

I looked at these Seat's as a shed before, I just coudln't live with the interior. Its probably built fine etc but it looks like something out of a 1980's Toyota Hilux frown

Yep, fair enough but I really hate rust!

That Seat Leon has aged badly. Such a square ugly shape.

BMW all the way! Refreshing to see one completely OEM and not a chav box with an ///M on the back!

Loved my cupra r, but had to make a head over heart decision and part ex it. Unfortunately now they're shed money they are becoming the chav chariot of choice round here, a simple remap gives 260bhp, combine that with a big exhaust and a boot sized sub and you can terrorise local estates with ease, until you lose the sump on a speed bump.

Weirdly its listed correctly as a straight six on the gumtree advert

To be pedantic, only listed as "6 cylinder engine", not specified whether inline, or "V", or Boxer, or Flat.
Or even "radial"!

Hard for me, I like them both. I think the BMW edges it though.

Never really been a fan of the e46 saloon but had an e46 touring for a few years as a work-workhorse and it was comfy, reliable and felt reasonably well put together.

180bhp, rwd, 6 cylinder, unmolested and shed money - we don't know how lucky we are in the UK.
