oh dear that someone actually feels/thinks/believes that pressing a button/pulling a lever, pretty much when you like - via simply extending finger tips from the wheel, keeping your foot 'in'....
is somehow more engaging than all the different physical and mental aspects of timing, leg/foot, arm/hand, rev matchy whatever stuff.

I know PDK can be fun, it's certainly quicker, and I'm not suggesting manual is better every single time, and I'm certainly not starting a campaign to convince everyone they should all go back to driving a manual or that Ares' preferences are wrong....but unless you find the act of reaching out your finger tip and clicking a paddle mentally and physically challenging it simply isn't more 'enagaging'..by definition it uses less limbs !
You're not saying I'm wrong, but you are. You should be a politician.

And if engagement for you is solely about using more limbs, then you are right. But it isn't for me.

Anyway, I'm about to use my limbs far more and go out on my bike. I guess that would be infinitely more engaging for you than any car wink
totally! which is why I have a few bikes too wink

But I do like a non-indexed cable operated derailleur rather than the new fangled electronic shifters... hehe
Only joking!...;) wouldn't want to antagonise XJay anymore...bless

not at all.
Never going to or intending to change an opinion...
fun is fun and is subjective
physical engagement to a lesser or greater extent isn't....

anything mechanical that has the connection replaced with electronics and algorithms is worse imo.
Really? So do you still prefer tape recordings over digital ones? I work in the music industry and under no circumstances would I ever prefer using analog/mechanical tape over a computer, and I'm old enough to actually have worked in studios when they solely used tape! Anyone that would insist on doing so nowadays is a masochist as far as I'm concerned - it is still possible to do so but the problem is tape manufactured today has been shown to be of lower quality than it was in its hey-day...

Speaking of which, you're aren't empirically correct to say electronic algorithms are worse than a mechanical connection when talking about something being reproduced/copied digitally; digital reproductions are of far higher quality and often (but not always) identical to the original source when compared to a mechanically connected transfer - for example, there has never been an analog tape-to-tape that is 'perfect' as there will always be signal degradation.

As for the car, well, I love the new R8 - I don't know whether or not I'd prefer this one over the normal 4-wheel drive model as I think I'd take more grip and accelerative ability over steering feel in this instance but it's nice to have the choice!

  • Insert generic negative Audi comment from regular PH poster*.
IMO it looks like a great car. I'm betting it'll be great on a circuit.

Great post sidesauce... I'm sure I could join a conversation about a car and somehow pedantically twist the topic to be about somethnig else completely and then take a quote out of context and 'win'.
congratulations.

They're pretty much rwd anyway - fairly irrelevant exercise in my book. Nobody is going to be buying one because "purist", they'll be buying it because to prove to others that they're more "enthusiast".

By all means Audi, make a hardcore rwd version, but throw away the road car stuff and sell a half million pound, 1200kg racer with number plates - that at least would mean something.

You used the word 'anything' - that's what I was responding to. If you want to say I'm being pedantic then fine but I have not taken the quote out of context - you just don't like being called out on your bullish!t which from this thread most people seem to be more than aware of.

yes I used the word 'anything' in the context of driving engagement....is it really THAT hard to grasp? Is my post in the home audio section by mistake?
Also please define 'most people'? that sounds like a majority...if you could list the people that are calling me out, that'd be grand. hehe
also get some manners.
I'm not posting bullsh!t, as you so eloquently put it, I'm posting an opinion....

Anyway as we're now talking about bullsh!t, I'm a farmer, and I can tell you that from my years of experience dealing with cattle, I can say with authority that, no-one has called me out on my cows' excrement, although I have to add if anyone did call me out on it, I'm not sure I'd be that bothered.

So a normal Audi R8 quattro sends 85% to the rear anyway so an extra 15% is going to make that massive difference in the real world? Great car though.
100% this.

They appear to be described as quite playful and fairly easy to slide about in when really going for it.

Hats off to Audi for offering something like this though.

Good on you, good choice. Don't listen to the detractors on here - pure green eye usually wink

Pure interest, what made you go for the RWS rather than normal (85% RWD anyway)?

Well I’ve always much preferred Carrera 2’s to 4’s even in normal driving, so that sparked my interest. Then I was lucky enough to speak with Stephan Winklemann at the Frankfurt IAA a couple of weeks ago and his passion and enthusiasm for the car was quite compelling...
So why not!
