I agree it's better to offer the choice than just one model like a Type R for example. e.g Carrera S, GTS, GT3, GT3 RS etc....Although the Cup chassis is hugely capable for the EVO triangle type roads, the standard Sport chassis is still hugely capable and better for urban driving and accounted for about 50% of sales when it was an option on Clio 182.
In a video released today someone from Renault Sport said the 2019 Trophy will have the headline grabbing 300hp with a further modified Cup chassis with limited slip dif etc so there will then be 3 models. Also the standard Sport model means a cheaper price than the fully kitted out car or most competitors so you get R.S. engineering excellence at a lower price as not everyone has an unlimited budget for the model with all the kit.
That's interesting.

I'd be surprised if it was positioned as a 3rd model though, rather than just a special edition - the spec of which becomes the standard 'Cup' 6 months later as per Renault's usual policy.

Yeah it's always been around £1300, which is a bit daft. For that reason, not many get specced so it becomes a rare colour. You know the rest, ect.

I hope Alien Green makes a return but it always seems to be a discontinued colour and not very popular, so they end up scrapping it. Ultimate Green on the MK2 Focus RS and Viper Green on the MK3 Scirocco, as other examples.
It's actually the bargain of the year and to Renault's credit they only charge an amount to reflect the factory cost unlike other manufacturers who charge what they think the customer can stand. When Renault introduced this colour on the Clio V6 and 182 in 2005 it needed a whole new paint shop at the Dieppe factory to get the depth and quality needed for LY. The car has to pass through the paint booth twice hence double the price. The paint depth has been checked and it is twice the thickness of a regular metallic so you get your moneys worth.
It is also very difficult to get a great deep yellow as opposed to a horrible flat yellow which is why only Renault and Mercedes seem to offer it as a "regular colour" (and sure Bentley, McLaren, Aston can if you pay) and the Mercedes solar beam yellow is identical to liquid yellow in everyway except price.
Mercedes used to charge £10,695 on the GT and Black series cars because that was about 10% of the cost of the car so they got away with it. Now they have reduced it to £7,500 to try and sell a few more. That's still thousands more than it costs them
Therefore £1,300 is a bargain wink

You are right, they did that with the original Megane 225 Trophy to launch the cup chassis back in about 2004 but since then with the Megane III 265/275 Trophy and the current Clio 220 Trophy they are permanent members of the range not limited in numbers. The Clio has been out a couple of years and even has the same 20hp lift over the regular 200 that they are doing with this new Megane.

Sorry but I think the 265 Trophy was a 500 limited run (50 in the UK) and from memory the 275 Trophy was too. A quick scan of EVO, Autocar, Car etc confirms my normally-addled memory.

Plus there wasn't a 250 Trophy in the first few years of the MK3's lifetime, nor could you buy one in the last 12 months or so of MK3 production (I think...).

Agree the Clio Trophy is a permanent fixture, so you could be right that they'll do the same with the Megane,

Oh OK on the 265. The 275 wasn't a limited number, though in the end they sold about 98 so it is in fact worth hunting down as the Ultimate Megane 3 version. The Trophy-R was limited to 30 in the UK but I think they only sold 24 in the end which proves the point that the expensive hard core versions might get coverage in the media but they sell in small numbers.
No there wasn't a 250 Trophy at the beginning of the mk3 as they had already moved onto the 265 by the introduction of the Trophy spec? The 275 Trophy was discontinued so they could bring in a much lower price Cup-S run out model for the last year which then had most of the Trophy spec available as options so you could pick and choose what you want.

Thank you, much appreciated. The videos floating around (i.e. Evo's) show them pretty clearly too. Sutcliffe says they're the same as the GT's. They look more attractive than the MK3's boggo ones.
They look good to me. The seats on my Clio Trophy are just as supportive as the old Recaros in my 250, but a bit softer and include the heating elements (which you couldn't have with the old Recaros). If the new seats are similar then they'll do the job well.

The 265 Trophy overlapped with the late-250 cars. The power hike to the standard cars came afterwards.

You're right on the 275 Trophy not being a ltd edition though.

(Sorry for the thread drift)

I really like this, it hope it's still the drivers hot hatch of choice & that they haven't tried to make a Golf clone.

If the following lines don't appear in the reviews for the new Megane RS, i'll eat my hat:

"The Megane has grown up"
"Much more refined"
"Lost it's dynamic edge"
"We'll wait for the cup/trophy version"
"Needs an extra 20bhp"
hahaha, so true!

Furthermore... this car is just one example of the golden age of motoring in which we live at the moment. Sure, horsepower grabs headlines. But there are many permutations to performance, and we today have diverse slices on offer.

not just cmoose...
lots of enthusiasts prefer or enjoy a NA engine.
Whether you prefer it or not it's always nice to have choice right?
an alternative to lag and thrust...extending an engine, a different tone and experience...

As the owner of a 275 Cup S I may be biased towards Renault products but I really like this thing. Not OTT just subtly aggressive. If it's 90% as fun as my car it'll be the most fun new hothatch you can buy. But at 100kg+ heavier, will it be?

Too early to say if it will be though. The donor platform is supposed to be lighter than the outgoing one.
