Hey guys, I'm looking into buying an S3 in June but after reading this thread I'm in two minds about it now. I live in an average area and don't own a driveway or parking directly outside my house so no CCTV either, would I be mad to continue with this purchase? This is a huge decision and being 22 if mine was to be stolen insurance wouldn't touch me ever again.
Jesus christ buy the car you want.
I get this point I really do.....having owned a fast Ford in the 90's when car crime was rife, the grief of worrying about it getting nicked was a right pain in the arse. Really distracting away from the owning experience, although I did keep the car for 3 years smile

The majority of them don't get stolen. Just buy one.

In yesterday's daily mail,, they had one about two car thieves who are currently up in court. They took the tracker from the stolen vehicle, but instead of dumping it, left it in the car they were driving.

Police followed the tracker... rofl

A few months ago we had an S3 stolen from the housing estate where I live. Thieves broke into a few houses in the middle of the night whilst people were at home in bed. Then they took the keys to the S3 from the house and stole it from right under the owner's CCTV cameras. They looked at the cameras and didn't care.

It was reported as seen on the road that night and on the M66 heading towards Manchester the next day. Apparently the tracker last transmitted from the docks at Liverpool where it was presumably shipped out.

We've had a few people hanging around in cars who may or may not have been up to no good. Then the other night we had two guys taking selfies outside people's houses with their houses and cars in the background. When someone challenged them they apparently said they were Ukrainian and the photos were souvenirs for their families back home.

I find it absolutely madness that people are preparing to fight someone or a group of people who break into their home solely with the intention of taking the car and going.

Cars are just a piece of metal nothing more, nothing less, your insured for things like this, if you are worried about payout values that either get return to invoice gap insurance or have an insurance policy in place with agreed value so nothing to worry about other than a fault claim and a possible increase in premiums come renewal.

I'm about to seriously modify the CS nd talked to the insurance company for an agreed value of 30k so if the worse was to happen and my car get's written off, I won't lose anything that I've spend on the modifications and it's only costing me an extra £120..

If someone were to break in and take my clubsport, I would not fight back, it's got a ghost system installed, they wouldn't know that unless they know about these things when starting a car and it cuts out or someone who I know or had worked on the car..

It's been at the dealers a few times and various other garages over the past three weeks, I shall be removing all keys from the ecu and reinstalling them plus changing my ghost code just to be on the safe side.

I've seen forum posts of owners being seriously injured even when handing over the keys, it's just not worth it.

My main concern quite frankly is me sleeping through a break in and the door is left wide open or a window break and ********* big nasty rats invite their dirty backsides in.

All my interior doors have locks on them! It would take them a while if they went round the back! Back door and then internal door same if they came through a window! Internal door before the stairs and front door! Even our upstairs rooms have locks so god forbid someone did have a go the wife could lock herself and the kids in with her and I’d protect as much as possible with the hope the police would get there quick we live a couple of miles from the helicopter base too

Or at all. Most of the time I've bothered to call nobody has shown up.

Witnessed a 'incident' between 1 man in a golf and 3 men in a Astra. No idea what started it but the driver of the astra pulled a baseball bat and started smashing the golf up, the other 2 astra occupants were kicking the doors and smashing the side windows. Golf ran over the astra driver and crashed into the astra, he then got out and started kicking the astra driver whilst trying to run away from the other 2 guys. Eventually he drove off and the 3 guys got back in their car and gave chase.

I heard the commotion and looked out the window and then phoned the Police after I saw the windscreen smash. I was on the phone to them for about 5 mins telling them what was happening, descriptions etc... I was told they had other people also calling it in and that they would connect all the calls to the same incident. I also managed to film some of it on a second phone as I've been told video is helpful to Police for identifying people, vehicles etc.. I told them they'd be welcome to collect the video. I told them I knew it wasn't the movies but the baseball bat had been left on the floor as well as a shoe if they wanted to come and collect those bits.

Did anyone attend? Nope.
Did they ask for the video? Nope.

Some random person came along 10 minutes later and collected the bat and shoe.

Bear in mind I could have driven from my local Police station to where this was happening in maybe 3 minutes without even trying.

They also didn't attend when I was sat in my car outside my home watching 3 men steal a white BMW 1 series. Someone phoned back 45 minutes later to ask if the people were still there.

However, last Tuesday when my wife noticed kids walking over a railway bridge they showed up super fast.

Like multipoint EuroCylinder locks, or keyed mortice locks, or like a toilet lock with a slotted release on the other side?

The cop shows on TV , the end of show summary usually pisses me off, it's usually no charges due to lack of evidence or a fine they'll never pay and a suspended sentence which in reality is "don't do it again"

I watched one a couple of weeks ago, guy in a hallway about 3m square with a knife, no way out behind, cops in front behind a glass fire door trying to calm him down.

He's really aggressive so they taze him, only it doesn't take him down and he manages to get a couple of lunges in ,luckily into the coppers stab vest , in the US he'd be dead now.

When you consider how much money the working family puts into the pot we really deserve better justice than what we're getting, scumbags are taking over.

I'd vote for a party that said we're putting up tax and all of it is being spent on more prisons and the police.

Things were different in the past, about 1988 I found an American tourists wallet, gave it to a copper, a week later I got a letter from the guy with a heathrow postmark thanking me so they'd taken the time to reunite him with it , a mate had his motorbike nicked about 10 years ago, gave the details on the phone, got a crime number , she finished the conversation with "if you get it back you will let us know" fk me

Real rats? you worry about being broken into and rats getting into your house!

If you think cars are just a piece of metal you're on the wrong forum , I used to think like you when I drove the latest 2.0 eurobox , couldn't care less but since buying the car I've always wanted, a car that stirs something inside me I can't explain, I really don't know what I'd do if somebody tried to steal it.

As somebody who is about to sign on the dotted line for a Golf R (albeit the estate) I do find this thread worrying and it’s making me doubt my choice. But what else are we supposed to do if cars are our thing? Do I get the 1.6 Bluemotion diesel instead and then spend the time driving around wishing my legs were cut off, or do I enjoy the moment, secure the house as much as possible, and drive the car I know will put a smile on my face?!?

All this talk of guarding the stairs and holding/pushing doors closed is bks, the reality would be much different at 3 in the morning when you’re half asleep in nothing but a pair of pants, whilst being confronted by masked car thieves! The professional gangs who threaten/use violence aren’t the scally gangs who ‘relay theft’, they are well organised violent people stealing to order in short timescales, so if they are in your house to get your car keys then 99/100 they won’t be leaving without them and will do all it takes if you are there.

I dont think the choice is to go from Golf R top of the range right down to entry level 1.6 BlueMotion necessarily but you have stumbled on one of the most stolen cars around with a Golf R. Done know why the GTi's are not so attractive just because they are front wheel drive only..

Another thing to remember no matter what your decision is that thieves are not averse to literal daylight robbery these days not always dressing in black and creeping around at 3am. If they really want whatever car you drive they will have no hesitation in taking it and that could be a planned follow and car jack or worse assault to get those keys. Sadly you might want to consider locking the doors when you are driving around certainly at night but maybe too in broad daylight.

The bar stewards will also target lone women more so maybe if you have a lady friend who will drive the car too that should be a consideration as to whether the sign that dotted line.

Parking a car out of sight in a garage must be better than leaving it on display.
