@ Andrew I have young kids who do get up but they don't need to go downstairs we have a mini fridge upstairs anyway so keep that stocked with drinks but upstairs nothing is locked and movement is free, on a night it takes less than 2 mins to secure my house! Alarm on lock kitchen door lock dining room door then lock the lounge door which accesses upstairs and I leave my car keys on the stairs if they do manage to come through the house without waking us then they wouldn't need to come up where my kids are but I think whatever their point of entry is they would give up after 5 mins!

Yes this opens the possibility of car jacking which could be far worse but the street I live on is fairly quiet so you would hope that wouldn't happen, but you never know if confronted in that manner I'd just hand the car over I'd probably ask if I could take my child seats out though as they're pricey lol

I know you only read about the cars that are being nicked, as appose to the many many thousands of Audi RS/S's and Golf R's that have never been touched, but reading about all this has effected the next car we'll be buying for my wife.

An Audi S3 and Golf R would of been high up the list but I've decide it's just not worth the risk. A Mk7 GTi is still on the list though...not sure if this is any less attractive to these people than an R?!

Sucks though, that I've let it change my choice of car frown

Not from my (thankfully failed) experience.

We had our mk7.5 GTi just 3 weeks before the house was broken into. We were on holiday, and we'd taken the keys with us.. The keys were all they were after, they opened drawers with jewellery and valuables in, but left them. They even ignored a bundle of cash in a drawer they'd opened - £500!

This was the only time we've ever suffered a break in. We live in a quiet rural village which isn't on a through road to anywhere.

We are worried they'll come back as they didn't get what they wanted. I've fitted CCTV and made the back garden more difficult to get into, but I know they can get in through smashing a window if they are determined.

A gun it appears...

Case currently in court: a bloke got hold of a gun, applied for a license and was turned down , but kept it anyway.

Burglar came along, he shot the bloke dead. Charged with firearm offence, but not charged with the killing.

that's beautiful, how difficult is it to get a shotgun? wouldn't you need one that was automatic if 3 of these scrotes broke into your house in order to kill them all as reloading in such a high pressure situation could be difficult

I imagine the mere sight of a shooter pointed at your nuts, would elicit the desired flight response :-)

Not illegal, air soft guns. Fully weighed replicas of real guns but legal as they shoot little BB pellets. If thats all you want is the intimidation factor, thats the way to do it. You do need a "license" but all thats required is to go to an approved air soft place for 2 games and you're able to buy the full replicas in black. Got a few myself, including a fully weighed Barrett 50cal sniper rifle it'll shoot pellets at approx 500ft/s so it hurts a lot laugh

wow laws have changed a bit, my brother and i had scores of gas and sprung BB guns about 15 years ago, you could buy them online or in hobby stores no questions asked.

still got a couple of those rather intimidating catapults with the arm braces kicking about somewhere, those are far more dangerous than a BB gun.

Its not really a license as such, just means you can buy them in a store without the silly colours. Funny story, a friend keeps his in a room in his house and had Sky tv fitted. Didnt tell the sky man that they were in there, next thing he knows theres armed police flooring him with the police helcopter circling round lol

Not sure if its the law or just general etiquette but when transporting them it has to be in a proper bag or in the original box

One of the oddities is that you can OWN an airsoft gun just fine, it's the purchase of it that's controlled. Bit odd really.

But they would count as realistic imitation firearms, so might not be the best idea to start threatening people with them.

I'm in Yorkshire, so it's a bit of a trek from Scotland. I live on the end of a quiet cul de sac, so there's literally no reason for anyone to be on our road unless they are visiting a neighbour. Not only that, we don't get much passing pedestrians either, as it's a dead end. Police are convinced I the thieves targeted my house and it wasn't a passing attempt. I know that this thread has discussed GPS trackers that can be attached to cars and it could explain why they took a couple of minutes to inspect my car, maybe they were removing a device? I do visit some less savoury areas as part of my work so maybe got targeted there.
Not really willing to discuss my security now, I've been warned about sharing info on car forums.
Fair enough, I dont share anything too personal.

It's certainly a worry though, it could have been someone has seen you going into your street and it was just a coincidence they'd come straight from Scotland.

Hopefully you hear nothing else about it and get no more visits.

It makes me so angry to think we have to consider st like this when buying a car.

Oh right...great!

Thing is, a GTi is such a perfect car for our needs; fast enough, well put together, looks great, can carry loads of stuff. I'm really struggling to think of a car I'd want my OH to have, that wouldn't be as risky to own frown

Do you need a licence for an airgun now?

erk... um, what would happen if someone you knew didn't have a licence?

No, you don't need a licence for an airgun, except I think now in Scotland. You can just walk in and buy one.

Stupidly though, you can't buy an airsoft gun unless you're a member of a club.

I think half the Cat C/D repaired cars on eBay have been repaired with nicked parts.

I regularly see smashed up cars/vans purchased and then one nicked for the parts to put the legit one back together then burnt out.

No I don't do anything about it nor will I as I'm not getting myself and my family involved in the people behind it.

It does explain how written off cars can still fetch good money and make a profit though!

I do really like the Cupra but would it be any less of a potential target than a Golf GTi?

I have been looking at the 180bhp FR too, the only problem being I do find them a bit dull to look at (still a maybe though). I wish VW produced a Golf with this same engine/output.
