996 X74 suspension
Discussion
Hello
Just bought a 996.2 Carrera 2 fitted with the optional X74 suspension (40mm drop plus different shocks and anti-roll bar). Anyway it's really fecking hard. The test drive was on smooth roads but now having driven it on some bumpier roads I think it is a bit too much. Has anyone else driven a 996 with x74 suspension? Are they all that hard or are my shocks fecked?
thanks

Today is my second day at Centre Gravity, we're going with the X74 ride height but with Ohlins R/T dampers (and Ohlins springs), I'll report back on whether it is possible to have the X74 ride height and a decent ride.
DELETED: Comment made by a member who's account has been deleted.I am at 125F / 140R - not a lot above X74 and the overall ride is very good, but it is as low as my drive and local roads would suggest is wise - I have had zero issues. They have not sagged/ settled at all, as far as I can tell.
I left CG with f & r both set to 14 clicks from firm. It is advised to excersise the 'clickers' to stop them gumming up. Obviously I have played with them a bit ! Currently 12 clicks alround. I could go on for some time about how good these things are - at least when set up and test driven by Chris & Pete - but I won't! I can tell you though that your car will be transformed in many ways, all good - and that you will have a lot of pleasure recalibrating your driving !
Cost for me: 996.1 C2 was @£ 3.4k - but the car had already had a partial refresh 12 months prior. So that is probably as low as it could be.

X74 ride heights on 18 inch wheels are @118F / 133R. I have had my Ohlins R&T on for 2 months / 1500 miles. You are going to love them!

Do you know what spring rates for yours? Just wondering if they're the same as the ones Dammit had selected.I am at 125F / 140R - not a lot above X74 and the overall ride is very good, but it is as low as my drive and local roads would suggest is wise - I have had zero issues. £2,170: Ohlins R/T
£330: Ohlins springs
£1,550ish: CG bill, including remote adjusters for rear shocks, new track rod ends and misc nuts/bolts.
So, a total of £4,050. Plus £191 for the hotel, meals, and call it £60 for fuel.
Which looks like quite a lot when it's written on the screen in front of you, but I've had a really good time over the past couple of days and don't begrudge any of it.
The test drive was interesting, the very fidgety nature of the front end was hugely reduced - Pete pointed out that I was doing 95 where before we'd backed off at 60. The car accelerates in a straight line, roll in the corners is hugely reduced and despite a 20mm drop in ride height it's more comfortable. I'm set at 12 clicks from (fnar) fully stiff, I'll leave it there to sink in for a little while then have a play around.

I think this has the spring rates.
@ Dammit - enjoy😀, ,!

So yours are factory then and Dammit's are custom. Interesting!I think this has the spring rates.

A buddy had a 996.2 with both X74 and X51. IIRC it was actually on the tolerable side of firm.
X74 is basically GT3 suspension and while I've never driven a 996 GT3, I've never heard anyone complain that it was too harsh, so you might have had some comedian change the suspension bushings for harder versions.

I have a 996.1 C2 with suspension transplanted from a GT3 ( dampers/springs/top mounts/ARB links/geo/height etc). So I'd imagine pretty similar to your factory x74 set up. The ride is definely 'disciplined'.
Have you considered tyre pressures? The factory Carrera recommended pressures are significantly higher than the GT3 pressures (36/44 vs something like 32/39). Dropping the pressures made a big difference to the ride quality in my car.

These 2 setups are in no way comparable. This is why they offered the X74 suspension option on standard Carreras as they knew the GT3s would be limited run, and also to help garner interest in an (at the time) unloved 'new' 911 range.
OPC's aren't always right.
The X74 was the lowered sport suspension once available as a factory option for the 996C2 and 996C4.
It was not adjustable and was firmer and 20mm lower compared to the M030 (-30 from std) using the same M030 stabilizers.
The X74 was once available as retrofit kit through Tequipment for the C2 and another kit for the C4.
A similar lowered sport suspension was available for the 996TT and the C4S. (named X73)
The 996 GT3 came with a suspension comparable to coil overs :
It has threaded shocks for height adjustment, monoball spring tops and adjustable stabilizers (5-way front, 3-way rear).
This setup was never available as retrofit.
