But at the end of the day, I kept on thinking how much I'd love to put my 3sgte into a MK1. Best of both worlds. But I don't have the time or money for that so until I have the balls to sell my Turbo i'll just have to put up with it. First world problems.
I've previously owned a mk1 with 3SGTE (mk1.5). It was a beast and incredibly fun in a straight line. But it totally upset the handling. added weight + not much grip + short wheelbase + LSD + turbo lag and wall of torque = snap oversteer!

ETA: Best MR2 I've owned was a clean original mk1.
Fair dinkum. I guess there is that to consider. It would be a straight line weapon but i'll file it under 'better in theory' for now smile

Wonder what the weight differential is between the 4age and 3sgte? As well as how they're weighted in the car...

£5k is a week away with the family or a big night at the casino and lappy. Pin money for saving a Jap classic. The thing is 30 years old and still as nippy to 60 as a new Golf GTI.

Hmm. I've met the guy who's car this was a few times now, he owned it before the current owner. From what I've been told, this is a tidy example in person. It wasn't always a manual car. I don't remember if it's the current owner who converted it, or the previous owner. Certainly the last few years of its life it's been well looked after.

It's a better engine than the 3S. I would have taken that route but it's expensive and the support isn't there in the UK. Don't have the time/skill to do the custom work, or the money to import a Hux kit.

I am in a minority I know, but I think the SC is kind of a let down.

It's one of those cars that I think should be better than it is, maybe the SUPERCHARGER down the side makes me want more Wheyyy. More spectacular delivery not the kind of very smooth linear power it gives.

I love the MK1 but feel it's better suited to NA, being a bit under powered and lotusey suits it, kind of opposite to the MK2 where Turbocharging that car made it.

Is comparing the K20A to a 3S-GTE valid? They are very different, not least one is 20 years newer, saying that I wonder how many K20s will be making 400BHP reliably at 30 years old?

Every Mk1.5 is going to be different though. Thought the handling of mine was brilliant. But it had W2A so a little more weight up front, an NA gearbox (my god can old school Toyota stuff take abuse!) So a little less weight out the back a hard top body and adjustable ARBs and coilovers all round (and GT4 brakes)

Running 205 Toyota R1Rs I was always impressed how well it put down its 300odd horses.

Even stock AW11s have immensely tunable alignment so can be made as benign or mad as you like.

Had one of these in progressing from an X1/9 to NSX. The SC rather changes the nature of the car - because the extra torque means you don't have to stir the gearstick as often to make progress. Like having a bigger engine, whereas the 4AGE needed you to work the engine and gearbox.

Always planned to do the pulley swap, but never got around to it.

I'm sure that it was faster than a std one when accelerating to overtake and was certainly more flexible but in a straight 0-90ish it wasn't appreciably quicker than my mate's standard car - needless to say I wasn't impressed.
I'm sorry you must've had the most colossally broken 4A GZE. NA Adub doesn't stand a chance against the SC. Loved mine it was a TLGP weapon and very handy at hillclimbs too. Only sold it to get a MK1.5 3SGTE conversion...
!!IC they had 122bhp std, 144bhp SC - it's hardly a shattering difference.

I have owned many supercharged MX5s and they are the similar - the 10-90 difference isn't dramatically different - the flexibility and the speed it picks up is where it shows up and that was comparing my 180bhp car to my mates 130bhp car.

Admittedly my 240bhp MX5 is a different league but it has 110bhp over standard - not 22 !

It's becoming a common swap in the US for SW20's and ZZW30's. Less so in the AW11, though there are a lot less AW11's around. It's a high performance 2.0L 4cyl, cost is similar to a 3S used so IMO it's a valid comparison.

The K20 can make ~400bhp in turbo form reliably when built to support it. You won't find any unopened 3SGTE's making 400bhp reliably at any age either seeing as the OEM pistons will st themselves. Both engines require internal work to support that power.

Without knowing too much about them, sure it was 145 bhp but a standard one was 122 bhp and the supercharged one, according to the article was 95 kg heavier which is a fair chunk. With that in mind, I'm not surprised V8RX7 found that it wasn't much faster than standard - why would it be?

40% more peak torque, sc'd car will have pulled out half a dozen car lengths on an NA in a 0-60. Mag tests of the time have it a second and a half quicker. Reason it isn't more is the SC runs longer gearing.

AW11s whatever the engine are great cars but they are quite different. I'd happily have an 4A-NA, SC, 3S or V6!! Have never driven a V8 conversion but maybe that's a step too far....

Ah but we didn't do 0-60 as that so depends on who gets the best start / tyres etc we did a rolling start - by 90 I was maybe 2 car lengths ahead.
