I live in NG15, a sleepy backwater of a place. I'm moving to NG7 (city centre) and my premiums are all going up significantly, and one policy will need to be cancelled as the insurer won't cover that car in NG7. Girlfriend moved from AL1 to NG15 & insurance fell by 30%

Golly gosh.

I had a 530d when I was 21 and it was £1400 a year!

I'm now 28 and insure an A7, A5 and TVR Chimaera for about £900 a year all in.
I have noticed increases over the last couple of years, however. My E93 335i a few years ago was only £220 a year to insure!

I agree with others - definitely look at your postcode rating.

scratchchin

Statistics, funny old thing.

I paid £150 third party for the insurance on my Viva. I was just wondering how that compared.

£100 in 1979 → £476.67 in 2017

So, £150 is £715 in today's money.

But, in Nottingham beer was about 30p a pint, so it should only be £1.43 today.

I feel robbed weeping

Someone on a Merc forum I use was complaining about insurance costs so I did price comparison - using my (according to that site) B rated post code and all my other correct I then just changed to his F rated (Leeds LS1). The premiums literally tripled, from £250 to £750 and whereas for my postcode it was firms like LV=, the lowest in LS1 were firms you've never heard of. First recognisable name was another £100.

But according to the chart Hyson Green is a better bet than NG15 biggrin

Adding named drivers can change the price dramatically, for myself age 27 on a c63, 6 points, 1 claim, driving nearly 10 years wanted £2,400! Added the girlfriend as a named driver dropped to £1200 no idea how that works out!

If you think it's a rip off, why not start your own insurance company and make presumably enormous profits insuring young drivers?

What I'm saying is the chart is wrong, as NG15 is clearly cheaper to insure than NG7 or AL1

I used these sort of stats when I was house shopping. I bought in DN22 which was classed as safe.
I'm 32 and pay just under £350, but even at my old address and at 27 I didn't pay much over £500.

Pick a car that all your mates buy and crash and stereotypes are formed and insurance follows that.

Edit: That's for my Noble.

I'm 65 years old, clean license since Iwas 18 years old (speeding) never had a claim, employed all adult life HGV & PSV driving yet my insurance goes up every year. The Insurance companies know we must have insurance & we are a captive market to be robbed blind every year.
My first car was a Hillman Minx 1500cc insurance at 17 years was £14 8s 9p (£14.43p) TPFT.

Have you ever considered insurance is a competitive market? Maybe these rates are just what it costs.

If an insurance company could dramatically reduce premiums they'd just go to the market and clean up.

One of the privileges about getting older are reduced premiums, until you're really old then they'll start to increase again.

I passed at 21, my first car was a 1.6 megane coupe that I insured with a classic policy for £550, that got written off in a non fault accident, then my 1.8 astra was £800, my Octavia 1.8 20v with every modification declared £550, and my current BMW 330d for £850 at 27, again modifications declared and on a 12'000mile policy.

I've got a theory that by starting with larger engined family cars you can move up in engine size or power and the insurers give decent quotes, you've demonstrated that you can have a more powerful, bigger car and not crash.
The leap from 1.2 city cars to a 5 series shows inexperience in a large car with an engine of almost double the capacity and hugely more powerful.

Multicar policies can help if you've got more than one car (can even use cars that are at a different address i.e parents). Also try haggling on the phone - it's worked for me before.

I've just gone through the renewal for mine, £1650 cheapest non telematics quote on comparison sites, £1100 on our multicar policy with 2 other cars - same company. That's for an F Type S at 24, good postcode, 7 years no claims. My V8 Vantage at 23 was under a grand, I think it's the changes in tax/injury payout rules that have made it go up for everyone.

As long as you can afford it and the car justifies the expense it's just a necessary evil - it's when I read of people my age paying £2k for 1.2 hatchbacks that I really wonder!

Something isn't right.

I turned 30 this year, have 12 years NCB, been driving 13 years next month. No accidents, etc.
My insurance for a Discovery 3, with lots of off road and travel mods, all declared, with business cover and 15k miles pa.
£414 a year.

When i got it at 25, being a full time student, my insurance was still only £550 a year.

You must live in a proper st hole, or are tarred with something.
