I have a cherry tree which is fully grown, the previous owners chopped it right back so there were hardly any branches on, is it worth doing this, will it benefit the tree in any way.

I bet your neighbours love it when it drops all of its blossom in their back garden.

Quite, one can almost hear the mutterings of "Bloody nature with it's bloody beautiful blossom trees spoiling my perfect fake lawn"

We live in a very strange world.

My neighbours apple tree drops apples on my lawn. And leaves. Until a zombie apple comes after me I shall worry not.

Do not prune it now!

Cherries are prone to a condition caused by moisture getting in to wounds after pruning, so it's best to do it in late Spring/early Summer on a nice dry day.

At that time you can be pretty brutal with it.

It would all depend if you want to look at a nice shaped tree or a skeleton which will grow like a mofo and need doing again in 3years time.
Ps, it isn't anywhere near fully grown and probably won't ever will be given it's location
