who in their right mind will spend that kinda money on a golf.
The people that get the infamous lease deals on them, I highly doubt that anyone has actually bought a Golf R outright (one less than 3 years old anyway)
Do you know what infamous means?

I do, hence why I used the word. The amount of people that've leased Golf R's has taken away the exclusivity, I wouldn't say that's a good quality so I think I'll stick with the words that I used. smile

Yeah, it gets great reviews..........................
That's the older generation RS3. The newer one, i'm led to believe, is more improved and much less under-steery.
Nope, supposed to be an improvement but I've still read pretty shoddy reviews of the new car.
Do you own the much worse mk3 focus rs? rofl

I'd say shoddy is an exaggeration. Since formation of the new Audi Sport division, most of the new models are being praised for having gotten rid of a lot of the understeer problems that plagued the previous generations of RS cars, but Audis do often get accused of being one trick ponies in so far as they can go very fast in a straight line and have good grip in corners, but aren't particularly exciting to drive once that initial excitement wears off.
Looks and performance-wise I'd love to try an RS6, but the associated cost has me sulking in the corner! smile

As great as it would be, the Audi wheels and Audi oval exhausts would perhaps suggest it's more likely to be a mule for some Audi test work. Either powertrain or (given the fact it has ride height stickers on the wheel arches) a dynamics test car of some sort....or both. Fairly common for powertrain mules to be whatever they have to hand and works, or whatever they believe is closest dynamically to whatever it is they're planning on making next. This could, for example, be an early next gen S3 platform.

Is it a possibility that this is the mk8 r being developed with the 5 pot? The Golf GT clubspodt is like 275 bhp and while that is a limited run model with a different drive train, it could be VW trying to create a bigger gap between the GTI & R. I know one is 4wd and one is fwd so obviously that is the difference between them but from a marketing perspective it could make sense

Exclusivity is great if you've put your own money into one. Not so great for VW who ultimately want people driving them.

If they can tame the understeer from the different weighting of the bigger engine, it will be an epic car, and probably at a fair price.
Agreed.

Why would Audi give away their USP? Seems nonsensical to me.
Because the RS3's been around for a while and they're all part of the VAG umbrella - if VAG can shift another 1,000 Golf's a year using that engine and only cannibalise ~500 RS3 sales, then they're ahead...

Interesting that the car in the pictures sports MK 7.5 tail lights, but Mk 7 front lights and bumper. Any chance this could be a modded R MK7?
That's what I was thinking - could just be a customer modified car?

The R Estate was also seen pre-launch testing with oval exhausts, so with no video to verify the engine it could mean nothing.

Consider that most car journalists say the Golf R drives far better than the S3 (and I agree with them), the Golf R400 could be a better (and slightly cheaper) RS3. What's not to love? And perhaps they'll give us a 3-door version as well.

New golf aside - the last time VW had a 5cyl in a Golf was the MK 4 V5 - it was largely unloved / thirsty and slow, but I had one as a second car purely for the noise!

5Cyl Sound unlike any other engine and all the better for it - hope they do it on the latest model!

Regardless of what car this is/isn't, the rear looks SO much better with two exhausts.

Go on VW, you know you want to too wink

Perhaps they are going to do Two 'flagship' Golfs, the normal R and the 'R400' ? Basically like Audi S3 and RS3. Would kinda make sense in the conjested VAG sector of Hot Hatches and be rude not too!

Absolutely, and I own one, and if they then put them centrally too that would be perfect!
