After a run of disastrous FFRR's that were forever in being repaired or recovered, we bought one of these earlier in the year, not particular interested in looks but more of a tool to do the things we want to do as family without fear of being stranded at the side of the road in a LR product.
Looks are not to everyone's taste but as a overall package it is truly a astonishing car, we have been been down to Switzerland a few times skiing and took it too Portugal for the summer, covering nearly 900 miles in a day coming back. Performance, comfort and refinement are a different world to the Range Rover as is the huge boot space, we loved our's so much we've just bought another, taking delivery last week. Unless you've lived with one and experienced it you would be hard pushed to comment based on looks alone.
So would you buy the Diesel?Looks are not to everyone's taste but as a overall package it is truly a astonishing car, we have been been down to Switzerland a few times skiing and took it too Portugal for the summer, covering nearly 900 miles in a day coming back. I'm not the target audience, but... who is? A two hundred grand diesel - who pays that for a car, but worries about mpg? I just don't get it at all.
I just can't imagine who in their right mind would spend that much money on one of these ugly machines. It redefines undesirable. I'll be amazed if they sell even fifty.

I don't understand the sheer hate for these. Whilst the styling is, in my opinion, hideous from the front and boring at the back, I totally understand why some would love these cars.
Lovely and comfortable place to be, nice driving position, performance aplenty for most people with a very nice interior.
Or are people on PH more concerned with how something looks rather than how good something is at what it's supposed to do?
Personally I couldn't drive an ugly car any more than I could make love to an ugly woman. [/Swiss Toni]Lovely and comfortable place to be, nice driving position, performance aplenty for most people with a very nice interior.

However good the Bentayga is technically, it's very ugly for no good reason. They could have made it look terriffic had they tried.

That engine looks like an incredible piece of engineering. Quite intrigued by the 48v electrics; does the whole system run at 48v or just the electric supercharger?
I did some work on these - it maintains a standard 12V system for the majority of the car but 48V for the electric supercharger and the other fancy suspension gubbins they have.HardtopManual said:

It isnt necessarily all about the moneyI ran a TDV8 RR Sport for a number of years and on several occasions did the South of France to the ferry ports as a single journey
The car was a fabulous place to munch miles and at north of 130kph I suspect a petrol would have had me stopping a lot more frequently
Cheers

Yuck!
Ugly car, ridiculously over priced. At the end of the day without the big w12 petol lump in its just an Audi Q7 in a posh labeled frock.
Bet the diesel version out sells the petrol 2:1. There are alot of possers out there who's pockets aren't quite as deep as they want people to believe.

And what's wrong with that, exactly? The interior is different, the bits you actually touch and feel are different and of much higher quality.
Doesn't seem to be an issue for the Rolls Royce Ghost.

I love these hero tales of pan European mega miles. That trip must be just about the easiest driving it's possible to do. Leroy902 said:
So what are we looking at?...
An ugly version of the audi q7?
No, it's just an ugly Bentley. An ugly version of the audi q7?
Not sure why all the hate for sharing a platform? Didn't seem to harm the sales of the Continental GT, neither did it harm sales of the Rolls Royce Ghost.
Clearly everyone on PH is a guru when it comes to designing cars, and taking into account the cost of development and manufacturing etc.....so would they come up with a better idea whilst still keeping the price similar to what it is now? Let's say you get one for £160k with options. A top of the range Q7 costs how much? Add on top of that the far superior materials, time taken to do the interior design and production (just look at how Bentley do this, and you'll see where a lot of the money goes) and take into account the relatively small production it doesn't seem too horrendous.
But....nope, it shares a platform with the Q7 and therefore, according to those who haven't driven it, it must drive and feel IDENTICAL to a Q7

I would say it would be more about range and time to fill than fuel cost.I just can't imagine who in their right mind would spend that much money on one of these ugly machines. It redefines undesirable. I'll be amazed if they sell even fifty.
