I've been reading threads on here for a number of months but after passing my mod 2 this morning I'm now on the lookout for a 1st bike. I've narrowed it down to two options

MT07 - This is the bike that I have liked ever since I got the idea of learning to ride in my head. I've also been learning to ride on one and have really liked it. I've found a pre reg one (with 3 miles on it) locally in my favourite colour scheme that they are willing to sell at a decent price compared to new.

Street Triple - I've never ridden one but everyone seems to rave about them. I've found one at a local dealer - 12 plate, one owner, 3200 miles few nice extra bits on it. This is a few hundred cheaper than the mt07 that I've found.

I'm torn between the two but I'm swaying towards the MT07 for the following reasons - manufacturers warranty for 22 months, I know what it's like to ride, it's got ABS, it's what I thought I would buy even before I did the CBT, has a fuel gauge and gear indicator, main dealer is local.

I can't ignore the street triple though as people rave about them, the one I've found is mint, it's cheaper than the mt07 and they are made about 5 miles from where I live.

I can't get a test ride as I've only had my license for 5 minutes which is fair enough and with the MT07 I don't need one as I know where I am with it. Whilst learning I did have a try with the school's honda cb650f and I didn't get on with it due to how close the gear change and rear brake were to the foot pegs. I've sat on the street triple and the footpegs felt similar to the Honda. I have size 12 feet so it might be something that I get used to and it isn't a problem but I don't know and I'm not sure I want to lay out a good few thousand to find out.

With all that in mind would I be silly to just stick with what I know and get the mt07 or are my thoughts about the street triple something that I'll soon get over?

The Street Triple is the next level up power wise. Both are great but you may get bored quicker with the MT07.

You really need to try out both or you'll be looking back wondering what the Triumph was like.

Personally, a lack of extended warranty wouldn't be a deal breaker for me on a Triumph of that age and mileage... and even if it is you could take one out either through the dealer or a 3rd party. They are a very popular first bike for plenty of folks with a fresh license and many dealers understand that in regards to test rides. Just explain the situation you are in and see what they say.

Cheers guys. To be honest I've not been anywhere near the limit of what power the mt07 has so I'm not sure if I will need what the triumph has to offer for now.

The warranty isn't an issue, I doubt there will be any problems with either bikes but it's nice to have a factory warranty.

I'm in no great rush so I'll have a bit of a think about what to do.

The Street Triple is streets ahead of the MT-07. It's just a superb bike. If you were looking at an MT-10 then obviously it would be a different kettle of fish.

I'd have a street triple everyday if I had that choice. Have ridden both and it is just a much better bike imo. Sounds like you have your mind made up on the mt07 however

MT07 bike is a cracking wheelie bike so could keep you interested later on that way.

It remains the only bike I have managed to hoist the front and from 1st to 3rd before it came down and I'm ste at wheelies!

Haven't ridden the street but having ridden a Daytona 675 the triple is a fantastic engine! The spread of power makes it feel like a larger capacity bike imo.

From reading up I'd expect the Triumph to have better suspension than the MT, the Yamaha felt a bit budget in that department when riding it.

Not a bad problem to have and make sure you update when you have made the choice thumbup

Street Triple is definitely the "better" machine, but if you don't fit on it what does it matter!?

A mate had the same dilemma recently, and what was the massive deciding factor was the insurance. The Triump's insurance was around double the MT-07s (and we talking about 1200 I believe for the Yamaha - got to love London).

OP, I am pretty much in the same boat but a little way behind you. CBT done, theory booked and few guidance lessons (hopefully!) to my A license.

I have considered MT 07 and Street Triple

Have you considered the Suzuki GSR 750? That is my new contender at the moment, just need to arrange a view at some point.

Anyone got any views on the GSR 750?

Thanks for the assistance guys checking the insurance was a good idea, the triumph is about a third more expensive for me so I'm less keen on it now.

I've been watching reviews on you tube and most of them are all about the triple R so I might bide my time and get some experience on and MT07 then look to change in a couple of years. I'm sure the street triple is an awesome bit of kit but if it doesn't fit me then its no good. I know where I am with the MT07 so I know I'll enjoy riding it.

Buy the Yamaha, people talk on here about the Triumphs like they do on the car fora about MX5s.

There's a reason for that. The MX5's is probably more about the owner than the car though.

Nonsense about the test ride, you're just not trying the right places. I passed my test in Oct '14 and a month later was test riding a Ducati Monster 821 from my local Ducati dealer. In June 2015 I rode an MT09 and MT09 tracer.

Youire at the wrong time of year for test rides but try the Yamaha test ride events next summer, or try a few different dealers, if they've got proper demo bikes you should fine somwhere that will let you take one out.

Oh and MT07 or street triple? Street triple every time. thumbup

Great. The MT07 is fantastic, I really love riding my mates' one, and he did not lag on our Eurotrip this year either.

The sound fantastic with a pipe, although I'd not get the Akro, the others seem to sound better - sort of old school cafe racer sound

Same boat as you, had an MT-125, fancied the MT-07, really fell for the street triple and it did feel right to sit on but in the end plumped for the Cbr650f, but I would imagine if you didn’t get on with the cb650f it wouldn’t be much different although I didn’t like sitting on the cb650f at all and the cbr felt much nicer even though practically the same bike.

My buddy has had his MT07 for at least a couple of years and loves it to bits.
I think it was MCN's bike of the year twice in a row so it can't be bad!
Enjoy your biking......

Decision made and unsurprisingly I have an MT07 in the garage. I've been out on it for a couple of hours this afternoon and loved it. When I've got some experience I will certainly be having a serious look at the Street Triple but I appreciate the thoughts and advice on this thread, cheers guys.
