I’ve delivered cars before reg instead of handing over on first day of new reg but that’s completely different to getting the V5, that’s just not possible
Actually I think we used to register them early for the first of the next month??

Yes this, I would assume the car has been registered before the date mentioned.

Definitely on the paperwork as 31/10/06, it surprised me to get the V5 before it was officially registered

Good god. Three days later they still send a picture of it looking like that ! That's just embarrassing. Especially after the "we always put interior pics on and someone is going to get their arse kicked" BS. It is now clear why they didn't

Better that you smelled a rat and didn't waste a journey (unlike me recently - 240 miles to be disappointed).

You can bet your @rse the dealer bid the car down when buying it - but is asking full A1 retail for it. Dealers must love cars that have been owned by scutters because they can probably rectify for far less cost than the amount they knocked off the 'buy in' price ?

What? Why would you think that? If we had to choice to only buy perfect pristine stock then of course we would, even if it cost more money. We generally despise buying anything that needs rectification, it’s a pain in the ass and even when you throw a bucket of money at some cars they still look like st (the picture above references it perfectly, likely had a full valet and still looks like that!)

You should see some of the disgusting filth that people bring in and wonder why we don’t want it/offer then peanuts for, it’s really not that hard to look after the condition of a car but some DGAF. Don’t get confused that any dealer wants the hassle of the prep work, if every car came in needing a quick hoover out and a spot on the forecourt it would make life a lot easier!

Can only assume the dealer was able to register early (planned DVLA outage?) and for a change DVLA actually promptly & sent the v5 out on time

We’re picking up a brand new car at the weekend — first time we’ve bought brand new.

The salesman has been fantastic. Even answering our questions by email on his days off. Without doubt, racing straight back there and to him next time we change our car.

We’d like to give him a little something as a ‘thank you’. Without asking him and spoiling the surprise, what sort of thing usually goes down well?

A roll of £50 notes thick enough to choke a donkey.

That should work.

I could just about stretch to the donkey. Will that do?

Yep, I'd be more than happy with a bottle of wine or 2; maybe a red and a white so all bases are covered.

My colleague sold a car to a very wealthy Russian, he was given a very expensive bottle of Vodka.

What % of your customers show some appreciation in the form of a bottle or other little treat ?

Very few, I have a couple of regulars who always give me a couple of bottles when they change but you are talking every 3-4 years; TBH I think they are the only ones. Had an old guy (in his 90's but still very sharp and active) slip me £20 when I delivered his car to his house a couple of years ago, I initially refused it but he insisted, he rings me every so often for a chat.

I had a couple last year who didn't buy from me that got me something, one whom I spent a fair amount of time with but I just couldn't get them what they wanted; a pre reg, he went out of his way to come and see me in person to thank me me for my help and advice, he got me a nice bottle of red.

The other; a long standing customer who'd had a few cars off me, he wrote the latest one off and decided to use that as an excuse to get something completely different, he popped in with a bottle of Whisky, to say thanks for all of the previous years service that I gave him, I still see him about walking his dog and we chat.

I don't expect it but its nice when it happens.

Any ideas for a very young, I guess trainee, salesman? He was actually pretty good and did all the donkey work before handing over to the sales manager to complete.

A nicely written and well worded letter to the Sales Manager explaining just how professional and helpful the young chap was.

Will be much more beneficial at this stage of his career than a gift.

And a 5* rating on Trust Pilot if they use it, goes a long way nowadays. Also a nice note on their Facebook

Yeah, I’d say this.

When I bought my last car the salesman couldn’t do the handover due to going on holiday and was trying to get me to wait a few days until he came back.

Naturally I was eager to get the car and said the only person available was the trainee. I thought no problem but they were a little hesitant as it was the policy to get the same salesman to deal with the customer from start to finish and he was upfront about it affecting their ‘scores’.

In the end the trainee done the handover as well as any other in my opinion and when I completed the survey a little while later I complimented him by name and gave them full scores. Got a call a little while later thanking me for doing so and especially for name checking him as he got a pat on the back by the higher-ups at head office.

Cheaper and more effective than a bottle of plonk!
