Hoping a Sales person can advise on the following please?

I've put a deposit down on yet another car. Should be paying the balance and collecting tomorrow (Garage was servicing, MOTing, replacing knackered tyres etc). Ive got a personal plate on retention V778 certificate.

Question - can the garage assign my plate to the car at the same time as they change the registered owner over to my name? Or do I have to wait on the new V5 in my name first?

I assume they wont change registered owner until I go to collect it and pay the balance. If it can be done at the same time it avoids paying an admin fee to the insurance company.

No, the V5 for your new car needs to be in your name before you can assign the plate to it.

I was in the same situation a couple of of months ago, the V5 came back pretty quickly and the insurance company didn't charge me anything. The least painful part of the process to be honest!

Thanks both for confirming - much appreciated!

Has anybody cited concern for the climate as a big part of their car buying decision? Are people particularly interested in hybrids and electric cars or in the emissions of whatever cars they're looking at?

I work in fleet (in fact, we've just been sold to an OEM...) and whilst I know how our group works, how are fleet sales handled in your dealerships? Do you have the one LBDM who is the "fleet guy" who gets all the queries batted over to him - or do you train any salesman in fleet queries?

Everywhere I've worked has had a retail person that knows a bit about fleet, LBDM and then a fleet department that deal with leasing companies, key accounts , big brokers etc.

Usually the retail person picks up on stuff with the LBDM isn't there and then takes the LBDM role when they leave or join the fleet department. You get a nice natural progression that way, and there's usually someone free with some fleet knowledge in the showroom at all times.

Until recently we hadn't had a dedicated fleet person, we had played with one in the past but only in a half hearted way so it had never worked out, we now have a dedicated fleet guy again for the group as we now have to and he is being used "properly".

It is a slow process in getting his foot in the door and gaining business as we are effectively starting from zero.

Problem is in the past many of the big purchasers who run a large fleet tend to have a preferred supplier anyway or deal directly with the manufacturer so we have never had a look in and if we were to get a random call from XYZ Ltd wanting figures on x amount of vans then invariably after a bit of digging their enquiry would have to be passed on to a preferred dealership or the manufacturer directly for them to deal with.

We rarely see company car drivers; back in the day a good 50% of enquiries were by company car drivers (who we couldn't supply to) as everyone seemed to have a company car, now it has dropped off hugely and you get one or two every couple of months.

Currently I am happy to deal with the odd one many band on a van and myself and my colleague (we are both predominantly retail), have a couple of local companies who will call up every so often to order a van to add to their fleet.

I think when our dedicated guy gets properly up and running we will push alot over to him to deal with when we start to get more fleet enquiries.

I always think it takes a fleet person a good 6-12 months to get up to speed, you'll pick up a few wins along the way, but bigger stuff tends to take a while. My record was 3 years prospecting a company before they started ordering with me, it's rare you'll prospect someone and they'll want to buy something there and then.

Biggest problem I had when doing fleet was getting a sensible deal from the manufacturer without them getting involved.

As soon as you got a good order on the table the manufacturer got involved. Politics got involved and they'd give the order to their preferred dealer.

Gave up with it in the end.

I would have complained to the fleet manager or director at the manufacturer if that happened. I've never had a dealer try to take business away from me that I've introduced them to. I've approached manufacturers before and have been told that another dealer is trying to deal them, in those cases you're given the same level of support for the customer and it's up to the customer where they order from.

I have had some from the manufacturer funding arm try and offer funding for rival vehicles in a meeting I had set up. She was told afterwards by me that she was never to do that in a meeting again, and I actively steered as much business away from her as I could afterwards. She was fking useless and didn't last long any way!

FB,

That was dealing with the fleet arm of the manufacturer. It was them, the manufacturer, that would steal the business and reallocate it to their preferred franchised dealer.

Got fed up with it, although the hours and pay were good, and ended up going back to retail.

Oh grow up, how manly are you calling a young girl a bh about an Audi business decision for which she has no involvement. Mr Big Man.

Irrational anger at a 16-year-old girl, not a good look.

I don't think it's Greta that Audi are worried about. You should probably be angry at Elon and BMW for making electric cars look practical.
