The 306 on the other hand felt much faster and probably had a better ride-handling balance.
Honestly I would put both in my all time hot hatch top 10, probably top 5.
Well said. And you're right, Its hard to class either as 'better' as it's mostly down to preference, since neither of them handle badly.
My 106 XSI has no PAS, and was very involving to drive. Loved it.
I've know owners of 205's with an MI16 engine or the 306 Gti engine. They are very quick on track and seem to handle well.

The 306 is quicker than a 205, but as for handling, the 306 is supposed to a bit less likely to lose the back end (some guys i know own both). The same is said about the 306 compared to the 106. I think all three hatches have similar handling characteristics, so they are all fun. I've not owned a 205 but I've had lots of 106s & 306s and can say the 306 is more planted. The most stable to drive I've had was actually a 206 Gti180, but still felt very 'Pug' like, I think they get an unreservedly bad rep.
I'd quite like to try a 206 180 - have tried/owned all the others mentioned plus the old 309Gti. It would be down to personal preference for the handling unless you were going to quantify it with lap/slalom times s m said:

It's a good car, you can grab a real nice one for under £1k. Not as 'fun' as a 306 perhaps, and doesn't feel as fast, but over a lap at combe I put in near enough the same times as my 306 Rallye. The 180 is considered a bit or an iffy figure. Most seem to put out around 160bhp.
I really liked mine, i'd have another.

Back when my friends were all getting 205 1.9s ( late 80s ), I really wanted one too after various drives of their cars and a long test drive
That was until I had a go in a 309 ( which were a fair bit cheaper as well secondhand ).
I ended up with a Graphite Grey one for quite a few years. Same sort of motoring .....but less money if you didn't mind the looks of the ugly sister!
