Happy memories - had two of those way back when.
Pretty bland performance figures by today's standards but great fun at the time.
I was thinking the same about the performance - you could hardly call it a hot hatch today, a 150PS 1.4 SEAT Leon would match it for pace. But on the right road you'll have so much more fun in the Peugeot.Pretty bland performance figures by today's standards but great fun at the time.
And performance wise they're enough - so what if a modern TDi can keep up in a straight line, hot hatches from the 90s were all about the twisties (and rightly so...).
Fantastic!
I've just been driving mine along some country lanes.
It really does whatever you want it to. In fact I was just helping my friend move house, took loads of stuff. I like that it's a bit nondescript too. If you took the badges off it could be a Meridian. Takes the road bike without taking the front wheel off no problem, can be left outside a pub/ train station for a day or two and not be vandalised. Comfortably seats 4. Then you factor in the fact that it's entertaining too. I love the sunroof open and windows down.
Mine's a late phase 3 in moonstone.

Great cars.
I owned a 96ish D Turbo 3 door in Diablo red, great looking and driving car...BUT!!!
...here goes....i preferred my mechanically near enough identical, (although much less pretty) ZX TD Auras.
They went better, they steered better, they rode better.....just that little bit better all round.
Perhaps my 306 wasn't at 100%, though.
Still, great cars and very much missed!

Had loads of 306s back in the day: 2x 1.8 Petrols, 1x 1.9TD, 1x HDi and 1x GTi-6...
The GTi-6 eventually got stripped out and used on track, where it would merrily run rings around everything in the twisty bits.... only to be dumped on the straights. They weren't thaaat quick, even in their day (even though what Shed says about the performance figures at Peugeot in the 90's being true). But, good god, they drive well.
Only when my Fiesta ST came along did I find a front driver which got anywhere near it, but it is a stiff, darty little thing, whereas the GTi-6 flowed, breathed... I want one back in my life... what was the phone number..?

Love these!
Started with a 309 GTi which ended up with an Mi16 engine but then it fell apart... in a ditch, but that's another story... but always hankered over a GTi-6 probably fueled by a couple of mates having 1.6 XS models on 17" and 18" alloys, lowered and with the Ecosse de-badged grilles and other such early 2000's period mods. Just a superb looking car and whilst I've never had one, the reports are always good.
Would make for a superb daily / track time / general cheap hot hatch to just use and abuse...
Good work!

I had a 5 door DTurbo version of this R reg. It was a sensational car and cheap motoring! You could go everywhere rather rapidly and still do around 40-45MPG. Mine was never quite the same after the turbo blew itself up at around 120k miles But it did keep on going for another 80k miles after that.
It was back in the day when, if you got a rapid one, it was rapid! I guess the turbo just matched the rest of it perfectly.
Good, practical motoring with lots of fun.

Wonderful - brings back so many memories.
I had a 306 XSi for 3 years - loved it. Chuckable handling, great steering, and a torquey 8v 2 litre engine.
But after 3 years (4 years old), so many things were starting to go wrong. I test drove several GTI-6s, and they were even better than my XSi. However, I decided to try something different and got an NB MX-5 instead.
I still miss the 306. If I could get an "as new" GTI-6 I would leap at it. Can we persuade someone to do a "Singer" on the GTI-6?

The press raved about these when they were current, and I'd always wanted to try one to see what all the fuss was about. A mate bought one as a cheap daily a few years back; a total shed, wrecked Fisher Price plastic interior and some chavtastic cherry bomb exhaust. Expectations weren't high, and trundling around at town speeds I didn't think it was up to much. Then came the twisty NSL road. Super-responsive, almost twitchy throttle, fast steering with mega turn-in, it was so keen to change direction it almost seemed a bit too pointy and agile for the mass-market. I suppose quite a few ended-up going off the road backwards. It was great, great fun to drive.
Incidentally I did have a 309 GTi years back and didn't think the chassis on my particular car was as good as the 205 GTi 1.6. I've still never driven a 205 1.9.

Had a 306 XSi back in the late 90s. Wonderful car. Chopped it in for a mk4 GTi 1.8T which was in another league for build quality and oomph but the Pug was much more special to drive in the bends. Had a great fluidity you just don't get any more. Missus had a diesel one a couple of years later in the same colour as this. Lovely looking cars even now.

Good shed! I miss mine a lot, even if it did seem to be a Friday afternoon car. They have a knack for taking your wallet for a beating (if like me you buy the genuine parts - even with trade discount), but when you’re on the right road and in the mood for it, nothing comes close to they way they steer, stop and sound (especially with a K&N and Piper cat-back exhaust - tunnels became an excuse to wind the windows down, change down to 3rd and blat it!).
Sadly mine seemed to have oil pump failure so I sold it for a lot less than I put into it (having no space to store it, needing a car for work and the potential cost of a replacement engine saw to that). If my numbers come up on the lottery I’d happily buy another one and make it as good as new (with some improvements).

Quite a lot. I missed out on a good one for £1K this time last year, recently sold for £5700 on eBay. I'd even say it looked better than the 205, some said it handled better too.I think the longer wheelbase meant you could play a bit more before it bit, so you had more fun without too much sweat on your brow, always a good point
Still love the 406 coupe V6 and the 405 Mi16. But then again the Honda Accord Type R.
Rose tinted glasses on ...... them were the days
I still think the MG Maestro is vastly under rated though........

I really rate the 306, and these particularly. I cannot think of any fall from grace that was so dramatic and so complete as Peugeot after the x06 era. I don't even think that the Mercedes-Benz self immolation of the 90s and 00s was quite as remarkable; all the Merc crap from that period managed to have ONE positive attribute (drove well, looked good, innovative in the case of the W168) but the Peugeot 207/307/407 were just utter st.
