If you're really after a V12 E38 then I think you have to break the budget and go all out for Francis Rossi's car

https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/bmw-e38-750il

This is one measure of a vendor
"Two sets of wheels accompany the car ( A winter set of alloys and a spare 'standing' set). but will have to be collected from me by the winning bidder."

I like an E38, but I wouldn't touch that with a Guinness Book of Records-sized bargepole. Electronics/ECU/electrics/wiring loom/various sensors (take your pick) will be toast. No, no, and thrice no.
laugh One of the best things I've read on PH laugh
Too kind. wink

This was me, reading the advert for that E38 750i:

That's my wife's face when i'm on autotrader smile
Is that during Sexytime ?

I am quite tempted by that but only at bargain money: sub-£2k
Agreed - at that price it’s a good buy - I think. I’d be tempted to leave the marks, it’s got a certain “no fks given” appearance that could make it useful in the thrust & edge of a commute into the smoke. It’s got the performance to go for the gaps, and the minicab boys will see the scars... Luckily, I have no such commute, and therefore can’t justify it.

This E500 Elegance saloon may appeal here. Heated nappa leather upholstery.

Why do people do this? Does the seller really think that throwing an additional floormat in at a jaunty angle to cover the hole in the original one will help it sell?

Aargh mad I’d rather see no mat, or a worn mat, not a blatant cover-up! It instantly twitches my ‘smart’ radar. (As in “will willfully obfuscate or decieve if they feel the average billy bunter won’t see it”).

Feeling lucky? £1,899 A8 4.2. I think it looks rather good! https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

I like the ad. Brief, but honest and to the point.

I have a E500 of similar vintage, albeit in avantgarde spec. Nice old thing to smoke about in and not much money involved

I agree that the ad sounds honest, but I still struggle with the A8.

There are thread fans, I know, and in fairness I've never driven one, but my own hard-earned pounds are unlikely to be chasing one of these. And, as I've confessed, I like some oddball st, so it isn't a brand thing but I just don't feel the love.

I understand the A8. My older version generally bored me, and wasn't something I would look back at with desire. However and as an example, a trip in miserable weather from Edinburgh to deepest darkest Wales highlighted how capable it was compared to other cars. I don't have a desire for any other Audi, but the Audi thing makes sense to me in the A8.

The only A8 that makes any sense to me is the original S8 (D2). I saw one earlier this week in the snow and it looked like the ruthlessly efficient all-weather fast saloon it was intended to be. I like the modest, clean styling of the D2 together with its more honest build quality. It is also relatively small by today's standards. The later cars are bit lardy, a bit over-wrought and a bit massive for me. That high centre console is corpulent; and i think the build quality is fake.

From browsing around the auction site from M. dG’s post on the 5-10 thread...

MOT history suggests a brake expenditure in the near future, but apart from that, would seem good, for bottom end of budget. OK, it’s neither automatic or particularly blessed with special engine, but it gets a bye on those point as it’s a Subaru.
That looks well looked after, very reliable, solid, sensible car (I have two with different engines). For some reason they've fitted wing mirrors from a silver facelift car at some point. Looks a bargain

I'd be happy to take a punt on that if I could get it reasonably close-ish to the money it's at now. Certainly at sub-2 it's appealing.

Decent spec, sensible miles, decent colour. I haven't looked at the MOT history, natch, but barring any test-drive concerns I'd risk it. Get my local paint shop to smarten it up a bit, give it a service, and then see how I got on. The temptation would inevitably be to 'invest' in it, but I reckon that would make a decent and honest motor.

ETA - wonder what it went for before?

Hopefully that link will work. Been sold quite a few times, must be something making people run a mile when they see it? Cynic in me wonders why it always seems to reach the same 3.5k price?

It’s rare to see photos of the inside of the engine in sales details- I’d like to see it do a few miles post-reassembly.

Really depends on what the paint will cost to rectify. It has a very good spec and an unusual colour.although pre-facelift I think. Great cars

It's possible that buyers are walking away after seeing it, but I suspect it's being shill-bid. The seller should be taking any sort of sale at that money, so the fact that it comes back on makes me think it's being bid-up and then re-listed when a genuine punter doesn't match it. Whatever the cause, it's off-putting.

Agreed.

In other e500 news:
I now have a replacement alloy and new tyre for the one I cracked. Hooray!

£279 for wheel and £155 for new Pirelli. Boo!

Final self inflicted insult is that when I scrapped the old wheel I forgot to keep the centre cap. Doh......
Good on the oft-maligned quick fit who found an old one knocking around and donated it gratis, albeit different to the other 3.

So which do we prefer gents as I will have to make all 4 match? old
new

I aquired this car back in may/june with the plan to fix it up service it and either keep it as a toy or sell on, i dont really want to sell it and im in no rush , but i have other stuff going on and the cash could prove useful towards them, plus i already have 2 Lexus cars

yes Very grubby and worn drivers seat and armrest, and I'd be interested to lift up that cheapy mat and see the state of the carpet. Most of them look like new at 150k.
