Sills, arch lips, around the petrol filler and tailgates on the Tourings rust.

Front end shimmy is control arm bushes.

All wiper linkages get sloppy and hit the back of the bonnet.

Check M30 engined camshaft banjo bolts.

Occasional prop-shaft guibos go.

They look rubbish with after market angel eyes.

What engine/bodyshape/trim are you looking at?
Thanks for that.

Absolutely no intention of fitting angel eyes and I'd probably swerve a car that had them.

I'd like a Touring, and certainly one of the larger engined/more potent varieties. There's a seemingly very nice 1994 540i Touring currently for sale that I can't stop looking at.

Did all the M60 variants have Nikasil liners? I do appreciate the theory that if it were going to have problems in that area then it would likely have happened by now, however.

It's possible that buyers are walking away after seeing it, but I suspect it's being shill-bid. The seller should be taking any sort of sale at that money, so the fact that it comes back on makes me think it's being bid-up and then re-listed when a genuine punter doesn't match it. Whatever the cause, it's off-putting.
Agreed.

In other e500 news:
I now have a replacement alloy and new tyre for the one I cracked. Hooray!

£279 for wheel and £155 for new Pirelli. Boo!

Final self inflicted insult is that when I scrapped the old wheel I forgot to keep the centre cap. Doh......
Good on the oft-maligned quick fit who found an old one knocking around and donated it gratis, albeit different to the other 3.

So which do we prefer gents as I will have to make all 4 match? old

Ditto. Looks far more, well, Mercedes-Benz.
Same for me.
The latter do look more modern, in a good way.
Unanimous it would appear. That was my initial thought too. Many thanks
blue edged for me too - sets it apart from the standard logo you see on everything from the cars to the vans and trucks.
Chrome star: that’s what it left the factory with.
I was going to say that, but fearing I was out of step with the majority, thought I'd best keep my views to myself. The blue-ringed one does look good though.
Hmmm idea

Throw (more) money at the problem and get both? That way I can switch them over depending on my mood!

Hopefully that link will work. Been sold quite a few times, must be something making people run a mile when they see it? Cynic in me wonders why it always seems to reach the same 3.5k price?

Or perhaps the fact they expect the punter to fix everything themsolves

"Examples of things you may need to spend money on are tyres, flywheel/clutch, brake pads/discs, ball joints/top mounts, wheel bearings, bushes, chips/cracks in windscreen, electrical items and lights on the dash for example airbag light or engine management light."

If they're happy to sell cars that will fail an MoT I'm not surprised no one wants it.

Muppets.

Swapping both our cars this month, a Discovery and a Freelander out, and have a SL500 and a FFRR in the sights, both around barge money.

To be frank, how often will you ever look at wheel centres? Save your cash, keep a 3+1 combo and see who notices.

Maaaaaaan... stuff like that really bugs me, personally.

My cars are always spot on. Although admittedly I probably lean a little bit towards OCPD tenancies - I've been known to dismantle interiors to eliminate rattles and squeaks...

A personal mantra, or maybe a guide to my (mainly - but not exclusively - vehicular) life - keep spending and working until it's absolutely sorted. Even if you spend multiple times its value.

I may have a small problem hehe

Sage words. Have you considered a career in therapy treating bargism and other car related obsessions?

Currently a (the?) thread superlative, the ubiquitous LS400 hehe

It's not for sale, yet... although I have bought and sold 4 since this time last year.

I've just changed the cambelt and water pump, put some Osram Nightbreakers in it, and cleaned it.

Next is 5 tyres (Uniroyal Rainsport 3s - although the 16" is hard to find), then a total suspension overhaul - upper & lower control arms, roll bar drop links and bushes, springs and dampers. Then new pads, and then prep and undercoat the chassis.

And then sell for probably less than I paid for it when I fancy a change (S Class with a big petrol engine or V12 7-Series will be next) nuts

Don't tempt me!

It will probably be in a year or so - I've got a busy time coming up. And I'm simultaneously building my engine (will be ~1000hp supercharged big block for my next project). But next year... I'm definitely on the look out.

I missed out on a fellow threadist's 540i Touring when my mailbox Nazi filed his mail into the spam. Bugger!

Yes, they had Nikasil but it's very unlikely to be a problem now.

In addition to E24man's list the other common issues with E34s are related to cooling... I'm not sure about the M60 but in general the fan clutch and infamous plastic impeller were problematic. I had both of these fail, fortunately without severe consequences.

Ah, I think I recall hearing about the impeller issue now that you mention it.

I've fired an enquiring email off to the seller of the aforementioned 540i Touring...
