On the X350 XJR I had a set of Conti Sport Contact that were utter rubbish. Noisy, tram-lining hateful things. Oh and they lasted 8000 miles.

Replaced with Dunlop SportMaxx. wow, no comparison. No tram-lining, much quieter, more confidence in wet weather including standing water.

What's on yours?
Pirelli p6000s all round with plenty of tread. I think they are the OEM choice as the last owner only used the local Jaguar dealer.
Apparently a pretty firm tyre and old design so I'd expect them to be a bit noisy really.

The earlier one, in black, is a thing I'd like to have around. I can't think of a single thing it would be ideal for, except perhaps going all Jimmy Conway in the direction of my daughter's future boyfriend(s).
biggrin Sure you don't want to be Joe Pesci? You are a funny guy.
How am I funny? Funny how? You laughing at me!?
I dunno you're just funny.

Get the fk outta here! biggrin

A pleasant 350 miles in the XJ today at 26.3mpg.

On bad surfaces the tyre noise is louder than expected - as expected with these x308s?
It does surprise me to hear that, but the 308 has a different, much more sporting set-up to my XJ40 which may make a difference - and I have never run my '40 with P6000s. But running quietly down the tarmac is one of the things my XJ40 still does well. (X308 is XJ40 based)

Not that I'm obsessive or anything but I think that's the car that was for sale last year for 4.5k. I posted it in a previous volume and a PH'er followed up with a test drive where the car was idling rough and generally feeling a bit down on its luck... and so he passed. IIRC it had a bit of a scar behind the driver's door, and in the new advert photos the plastic cladding does look a bit pissed.

Went to give SL1 some love yesterday in its winter storage - unscrewed the power steering reservoir cap a little too enthusiastically and lost the fastener down onto the sump tray. Drove home (in a different car) to fetch my ramps and extensions, which have successfully lifted SL2... but SL1 sits lower and I managed to catch the bottom of the front valence, causing the paint to break and me to say some rude words.

ETA - morer and betterer photos at AT

but if you are looking to spunk 20k on an R129 then it should be purple.

£20,000. Not just crack-pipe pricing, but with an 8 ball for good measure.

Talking of Jags, this is merely a 3.2, but if the claimed work done is good it could be a good deal

wavey

It was a decent one that just needed some TLC. Less than £2k would have seen it mint. I was first in the (long) queue to buy it at £4200, and jibbed. Looks like somebody’s polished some profit into it since I saw it.

It's not even the first resale since you drove it, as the first repair was done up North and the car went on sale in the general vicinity of Merseyside for 13k.

Quite right, I posted it here in the hands of the last seller at 12995 IIRC. Porsche RS levels of appreciation!

W140 S600 currently at £3000 with an hour and a half to go. I'm not a Merc beard but that seems pretty cheap.

A bit of a curio here - W210 E430 estate which has allegedly been bored out by German tuning firm Vath to increase capacity to 4.7l and power to 330bhp.

Neither figure is particularly ambitious, but debadged it could be a fun motorway cruiser / sleeper:

That’s rather a good-looking hearse isn’t it? Although far from perfect.

With the reference to price v parts, it’s not actually clear it’s running though is it? Or is it just me?

it was that period of car. A contemporary Jag XJ was about a hundred times worse.

I had a contemporary Jag XJ, and you're right, the bright green digital stuff on the dash was truly awful.

Subconsciously, I was probably remembering my old XJ40 when I posted about the Roller's dash.

mid to late 80s thing i suppose. War games, LCD and LED was all the rage, digital watches, knight rider, talking and digi-speedo Austins but then many cars were aspiring to the type of tech in AM Lagonda, personal computers... give the timeframe i guess RR were being quite reserved. XJ was vacuum flourescent i think.

It looks like a display that has been lifted straight off a 1980's Speak 'N Spell.
If I had a Rolls Royce, I'd want to test the "theory" (for theory, read: oft repeated trope) that the loudest noise in the car when cruising at 70mph is the ticking of the (analogue) clock. laugh
It's taken from print advertising from at least 1958, by the legendary sloganeer, David Ogilvy. Allegedly (or so the ad copy claims) quoting the "Technical Editor of The Motor" Also, it was 60 mph. First used in ads for the Silver Cloud II

In that vein, this is a good read.
