Right, there’s been some S8 love recently and tonight I can’t think of a finer way to spend almost £5k:

Bloody hell that's nice. What goes wrong with these?https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...
It’s also a good example of the value in having a professional detail done. Barges have great potential to brush up well.

Literally just bought a BRG mk1. No rust as it was a late import and undersealed yearly when it hit the UK. It's in the garage until the weather cheers up a bit but I can't wait to get out and about in it!!
Same story as mine. Under sealed regularly. I will use it in all weathers except when the roads are salted. Mine was also fully resprayed on import. Looks pretty good considering it is now 29 years old.Ps good ones are starting to go up in price. Now is the time. You heard it here first

We have discussed whether these qualify or not as a barge.
Mini barge for sure.
Being the 328 it definitely helps.

What’s the beard consensus on the GS300/430 as a backup option should I fail to secure a suitable LS400/430 in the next week or so?
I have the S160 GS300 (purchased one seen in this thread pages back) and am pleased as punch with it, especially for the few beans that it cost. Mine is still like new inside (on 106k) and drives as a barge should. It feels a big car and my wife has already kerbed the wheels but if you don't need to thread it through narrow country lanes you are rewarded with plenty of space on the inside as a result and comfortable for all 4 of us. It's not fast but in everyday use gains velocity in an acceptable fashion and never feels stressed. In light of the previous stats it has slightly raised the average capacity/cylinder count in the fleet - now on 39 litres and 74 cylinders it transpires!
I don't know if the degree of commonality in our collections is weird or not.
Mrs J had a BRG mkI V-Spec from 2005 to 2014. Tan leather and tan hood. Fantastic. 70,000 noisy miles done with very very little hassle.
Sold to a mate when Baby II was on the way, and now he won't sell it back. Can't blame him.

Sorry to divert the barge thread to the MX5, but I've never found a car that makes me hot and cold so capably!Mrs J had a BRG mkI V-Spec from 2005 to 2014. Tan leather and tan hood. Fantastic. 70,000 noisy miles done with very very little hassle.

One one hand a light, feelsome RWD roadster is a great thing indeed (and who doesn't love pop-up headlights? Brilliant.)
On the other the engine is a turd, and the body wobble and aerodynamic behaviour is hilariously bad.
A house move is going to force the sale of mine, but I will simultaneously miss it and wish it gone! A V6 one is on my list of cars to try and build before they go stratospherically expensive.

Then you need an Elan M100, FWD granted but excellent handling, roadster AND most importantly pop up headlights !!One one hand a light, feelsome RWD roadster is a great thing indeed (and who doesn't love pop-up headlights? Brilliant.)

I think I want a manual barge next. A large engine, comfortable and reasonably refined, but where I can enjoy swapping gears myself when I get off the motorway on some A roads. Any ideas?
I think you’re going to have to go ‘80’s... e28 535i or e32 735i would be the last bastion of the executive manuals, it’s auto from then on in, unless wilfully obscure (xm v6 24v?). Maybe an e39 M5?Anything likely to be worth having is not likely to feature in this thread though.
(If it were money-no-object - it’d be an e24 M635csi for me).
