Don't spoil it.
Joking apart, the E38/E39 models I've owned were almost entirely rust-free, despite my cars being well into shed territory. Is rust a big problem with the E39, and I've just been lucky?
I'm sure there's always the Scotland factor but I'll stick with it definitely being something to expect/be aware of when buying. As a former 210 owner and a current 20 year old 140, rust is impossible to forget
I'm sure PB is very sorry for re-opening old wounds. For my part, I'm very sorry for quoting PB's post, where he mentions rust. And for quoting your post, where you also mention rust.
And for mentioning the word "rust" two (no, three) times in this post.

Rare 3 pedal mini barge, a tad over budget and one for the lovers of black over black.

My E38 was solid (despite being 15-odd years old), and my L322 is still solid (and that's 16 years old). I think the last properly rusty car I owned was a 1983 Ford Escort XR3i. Man, that thing was as shot as a month-old pear. I've had cars with rust since, but nothing that I'd describe as being rotten.

If I was ready to buy, it would have to be this Super V8

You know you’ll never find the right car when the time right. Get it bought https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Guessing this'll end up near thread max but it's luvverley. Dark green metallic CLS with olive (??) leather, distronic, parktronic, rear blind, heated/cooled/massage seats, a proper engine... Somebody went wild with the spec when they were ordering it. Warning : advert is terrible. But it's done sensible miles and money's been spent. Never seen one this colour before - in the flesh and nicely polished I'd imagine it looks stunning.

For such a massive barge, those CLS seem to have no rear legroom at all.
Also, how does one start it if the engine start button doesn't work?
Seats are right back in the pic. Keyless go - can start by twisting the key in the iginition if the knob-button doesn't work. Also, how does one start it if the engine start button doesn't work?
I'm nosey so I've decoded the build sheet - Andradite Green Metallic with designo Graphite Green leather. Mega spec
Dreadful advert, but looks quite good. Pretty high on the spec sheet - Designo interior, COMAND, heated/cooled/memory dynamic seats, distronic.
Incidentally the keyless go cards might be NLA from Mercedes (assuming they're the same as the W211), in either case you still get the standard keys in addition to the keyless fobs.

I've had a few surface scabs on my three over the years but the only thing that was proper rusty was the leading edge of the bonnet of one of them, where an untreated stone chip under the auspices of a previous owner had taken hold. My current one is a December 2000 build, 170K miles, a car which was used very hard and somewhat subject to bodily neglect by previous owners.
That bonnet edge aside, when we repainted it last winter all the surface scabs turned out to be purely superficial and cleaned right up - not a single bit of welding needed. Which for a 17 year old car seemed pretty good to me. The replacement bonnet I got off a scrapper for £50, which was of a similar age tto my car, was completely spotless.
I have seen a few some which were definitely rusty though. But given that the youngest will be 15 this year, and the oldest are 22, and they are generally cars left out and used in all weathers, I think they do pretty well.

That's kind of what I have in mind. I'm asking £2,750 but I'd probably take £1.50 for it.
I'm getting the free r230 SL500 this week, and I am minded to turn that instantly rather than enjoy it for a while.
if only I could stretch that far (looking like my budget is going to be closer to £2k )I'm getting the free r230 SL500 this week, and I am minded to turn that instantly rather than enjoy it for a while.

TBH I’m never that bothered when selling: the objective is just to get rid and move on to the next money pit. On which note, the r230 SL500 arrives tomorrow. I’m already £444 down for a year’s insurance.
The loaded green CLS is attractive.

Re: e39/e38 rust.
Living where I live (Sweden) means cold and long winters and salt on the roads to a simply idiotic extent so cars rust, alot. I've had 4 e38's, 2 nice rust free ones, both were very scaresly if at all driven during the cold months during their lives and not at all by me and it showed, no visible rust, maybe some was hiding but they were fine looking cars, the other 2, one 750 and the latest one my 728 are as rotten as old fruit on the body atleast, the 728 spectacularly failed its MOT today but looked immaculate if somewhat dirty underneith. All 7 of the e39's I've owned apart from the M5 have been more or less rusty, the earlier ones less than the later ones.
The M5 will stay, but there will be no cheap BMW barge to run as a daily from now on, legendary BMW ccv froze over the weekend, it was cold I admit but hardly Siberia, drove to work this morning in a cloud of oil smoke, blown rocker cover gasket, leaking like the Exxon Valdez. and leaving me stranded, unable to get to work... There will be a new'sih Toyota IQ or a VW Up or something similarly safe but utterly boring on my drive rather soon...
