I will simply note that a 4-pot W124 or W201 with less than 100k miles is regarded as a rare survivor, and that the M119-engined W124 500E/E500 is a sought-after rare performance saloon, but that a 100k mile R129 with the same engine is seen as disposable. They're not even *that* expensive to keep going if you know what you're doing.
Funny isn't it. One of the most advanced and desirable cars of it's generation, yet the market is only just waking up. How can a similarly aged and miled 964 Cab, launched at around the same time to lesser applause, be worth £35k and yet the black 500SL above only £5k?Resisting a phone call on the black one. Even the 'plate is right for me.

It looks lovely there! And, as Fish & Chips is my favourite food....
Since having fairly recently moved from Shropshire to near Lincoln I've felt that we were more 'North' than we really are for some reason. I just looked at here to Amble on Google Maps. I've now realised that we're relatively not 'North' at all!
There's a whole load of England much more 'North'! In fact, Lincoln is almost exactly on the same latitude as Chester which is where I've always regarded the North as just about beginning. Lincoln to Amble is 3.5 hours.
On the western side of things I think you're close but personally I put it about 15 miles further south. I'm a Northerner and for a while lived in the Potteries and worked in Stafford. I always felt that there was a distinct cultural border on the A34 just passing Stone. South of that felt like the Midlands, north of that felt like the most southerly bits of the North.Since having fairly recently moved from Shropshire to near Lincoln I've felt that we were more 'North' than we really are for some reason. If you like fish and chips come and play up the the North Yorkshire coast some time. Whitby and Robin Hood's bay and Staithes and Saltburn are full of excellent fresh fish, and the moorlands are a fine place to wander around by barge on a summer evening.

I just did the same! Definitely not very close, although our most Northern threadists usually make pilgrimages of a similar length to even the most northerly barge meets.Since having fairly recently moved from Shropshire to near Lincoln I've felt that we were more 'North' than we really are for some reason. Driver's seat could use some love, but looks clean otherwise. Ash trays might need a clean.

You're confusing "far away" with "north"! Of course, true north is both. When I was young—still to this day, really—I think of Leeds as being very much in the south. I've been to Lincoln a few times, I have some work "down there" (see) and my sister went to the university. Once upon a time, I went to Boston in Lincolnshire, crumbs that is far away. Nice town. A wee bit Royston...I'm posting this from Birmingham County Court. That's in the south!

Well it may soon be time to sell my Skoda Superb 3.6 estate, a house purchase looms that will eat money and also gain me a decent workshop which will need populating with shiny tools. Owning just an MR2 roadster probably won't work though so I imagine I'll be looking at a bargain barge or 4x4/pickup for practical duties.
Your money, and if you've got the hankering for a new car you've got the hankering... However, this seems counter-intuitive to me. I too have recently moved, and I've been surprised by how much I've genuinely needed an estate, and in awe at the capabilities of the thing. I've moved tons of furniture, 3m long kitchen worktops, enormous quantities of chattels and detritus, and even pallets (don't ask!), along with successive runs of 10 large bags of compost, as well as countless other jobs.
You may find an estate pays for itself over the coming months, without either the image (or the need to pay to go to the local tip/recycling centre) or the relatively poor driving experience that comes with a pick-up.

Though I've been in London since 1993, I grew up in Leeds and consider that to be in the North. Lincoln is a Southern place to me, If you'd asked me before today if Lincoln was North or South of Chester I would have answered in a shot that it was way South - for Chester is merely a bit too far to the left.CharlesdeGaulle said:

Young people today? Don't know they're born. There were 150 of us living in a cardboard box in middle o' road, etc

Boston, Lincolnshire is far away from anywhere...even Lincoln! Edited by r129sl on Wednesday 25th April 10:39
It's still a nice town I think...more Riga than Royston nowadays...
I think the line of the beginnings of being suitably northern run something like this:
Chester, Buxton, Macclesfield (just about), Chesterfield and Doncaster are all North in feel. Grimsby gets a special inclusion due to how ridiculously run down it is.
I work for a firm based in Lincoln, and they deride me as a Northerner for dipping bread into gravy... Says it all.
