Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 12]
Discussion
Weird how our perceptions of North/South are so different, huh?
I've got mates from where I grew up (South London) who when I'm talking to (seriously) enquire if I'm still living "Up North?" by which they mean " Am I still living in Shropshire? And isn't it really cold up there? Couldn't deal with the cold weather up there!"

Or does the North start with proper hills and signs of work following the Industrial Revolution.
Lincolnshire and below being flatter, more straw chewing and hence feels Southern ?
I'd say there's something in that. Birmingham and surrounds feeling more 'northern' IMO than Lincolnshire.Lincolnshire and below being flatter, more straw chewing and hence feels Southern ?

Now you've provided the cloud condensation nucleus for an argument in the shape of that diagram, all hell will break loose.
(there's no way Shorpe isn't Northern.)
Very true! (there's no way Shorpe isn't Northern.)
I also think Shorpe is Northern - and the 'Northern line' is definitely drawn too far North in the West too. Cheshire identifies itself as in the North - and places such a Crewe are certainly in the North.
The line for me would be drawn somewhere between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent. Stoke is in the Midlands - but even so it feels like the North to me, so a bit of a hybrid in some ways! They have a strong local 'Potteries' identity there.
You should all search out "It's Nicer Up North" by John Shuttleworth.
It's a short film in which the travelling singer and keyboardist of renown attempts to prove the theory that people get nicer the further north in GB you go. He wrote a song on the same theme too. I can recommend both, and him, heartily.
Car related content too ("It's a Y reg, a Y reg, don't keep asking me why Reg?")

I think the line of the beginnings of being suitably northern run something like this:
Chester, Buxton, Macclesfield (just about), Chesterfield and Doncaster are all North in feel. Grimsby gets a special inclusion due to how ridiculously run down it is.
I work for a firm based in Lincoln, and they deride me as a Northerner for dipping bread into gravy... Says it all.
This is conceptually pretty good but needs the line to be much thicker and softer-edged.Chester, Buxton, Macclesfield (just about), Chesterfield and Doncaster are all North in feel. Grimsby gets a special inclusion due to how ridiculously run down it is.

Also, let us not forget that it's not the South that starts south of the North, it's the Midlands.

I think you just wanted to class Cleethorpes as a proper northern holiday destination hence dipping the line just after grimesby (sic) Chester, Buxton, Macclesfield (just about), Chesterfield and Doncaster are all North in feel. Grimsby gets a special inclusion due to how ridiculously run down it is.

As the thread has been somewhat derailed all day ... it appears that it's not just me that likes Jags and Iron Maiden.

As a Macc lad (remember them?) I’ll confirm that you are correct: half of the guys at work live 10 miles away over the Staffirdshire border (so The Midlands) and it’s no exaggeration to say that an interpreter is often required between the Staffs drawl (duck) and the Milltown dialect familiar with anyone who ever bought a Macc Lads album. Chester, Buxton, Macclesfield (just about), Chesterfield and Doncaster are all North in feel. Grimsby gets a special inclusion due to how ridiculously run down it is.
Don’t even talk about Buxton, 10 miles the other way.
