That looks like a cracking buy CdG!

I'm in talks over ordering a new car. Yes, a new car. I can't believe I'm uttering the words, but family pressure says I can snot around in a comfy thread budget heap but they want white goods.

If we do buy this kodiaq they're on about, I'll probably flog the S211 and inherit the wife's W169 a-class (which is probably worth < £5k but not really a barge) and use that to carry my road bike about on my half drive/half bike commute. It is unusually big inside due to the weird all-running gear under floor architecture, I tried the bike once and it did go in. Will feel weird not to be a proper threadist and I've not done it yet, there's still time.
If that's what it's for, flog both Mercedes and get something outrageously scruffy, down-at-heel and interesting.

I've a little thing for a Bertie Basic Jeep Cherokee (boxy one) at the moment, and I'm surprised at how few there are, and how not-bargain-basement-any-more they've become.

Grand Cherokee are still cheap as chips, but less charming. If a cooking Cherokee is good enough for the Fratellis, it's good enough for me.
Personally I'd seize the opportunity and buy a Series 3 Land Rover and maybe a super cheap hatchback shed as an accessory.

That Lexus looks like a cracker. Could see myself in one if I was to get back in a different barge.

As it stands, the 7's costs per mile is exceeding my old M5's. How do we reckon that Lexus would fair in comparison?

Black 5-door mkV Golf GTi are starting to catch my eye as a potential sensible do-it-all for the missus.

Family and business fleet ructions (what was the best alternative word we settled on for 'fleet'?) are likely to see her S211's boot space and 7 seats being made redundant by either a Ford Galaxy or Grand Espace so its days with us may be numbered.

I can get a Golf GTi past her snob sensor if it's done delicately, but my Clio 172 sets it off like an air raid siren, so that won't do.

Has the practical Leaf gone then?

I couldn't get on with the GTI, too anodyne, no soul to it. Quick and reasonable handling (although I don't like the way VAG do their damping), but boring.

The Leaf is a fixture for the foreseeable. I quite like it, and I completely get it. Herself, not so much. In fairness, since she ranks styling and badge as priorities 1-20 and running costs somewhere around 'nowhere' in importance when rating cars, the Leaf was never in with much of a shot.

Point taken about the boringness. They're smart though.

What I actually want to get for her is an R129 SL, but it's a battlefield on practicality terms for her, and if I want one for myself the mere discussion of it will mean the XJS will fall within missusmissile (missussile?) range, and I can't let that happen.

They really show the bulk of X350 when you park next to one.
Tempting to make that backwards step though.

I have the predecessor LS400 mk4, and over 4 years and 30000 miles: 23mpg (real brim-to-brim and including commuting), typical fluids servicing at about £200 inc MOT pa, cambelt+ water pump at £500 once, new tyres all round at £570 once, alignment £120 once.

Excluding fuel, I reckon an LS430 will cost less to run than an A3, never mind an A8.

Why oh why oh why hasn't one car got it all? Why did they have to spread the different talents around instead of concentrating them into one fabulous, all-conquering mega-barge?

Frustrating.

That really is a very handsome car, and those colours suit it well. It has an elegance you don't often see on cars even from those days, let alone now.

20 years in MBs and first time in a Lexus. Switchgear is typically Japanese but otherwise I flipping love it.

I swear there is no more noise at 70+ than at 30mph.

Smooth as silk to drive but obviously little in the way of feedback. Exactly as I expected really.

That is a good point. The thread seems to move in waves.

There's a thesis in there somewhere for some bright young thing to establish the thread's cause and effect; 'what is the influence exerted of people you've never met on car-buying choices ... '?

(Not on me, obvs, I'm an individual, immune to outside influence, yadda yadda)

You're littler than I imagined!

Glad you're enjoying it. I have 7-spoke wheels - yours look very smart and a lot more MB-like.

ETA - no sign of the window de-lamination on yours?

Don't forget to include this one that I bought for the Mrs.
