That looks superb. A really great car, despite a strong price it is put into perspective by what you’d need to spend on anything modern/new and remotely interesting.

I wouldn't say all barges are bangers. There is some stuff posted here which to me is a banger rather than a barge, but I love the ethos, even if not the car.

Barges and bangers are usually not the same, and conflating the two classes is a Bad Thing. A small number of barges are bangers, but most are not. A small number of bangers are barges, but most are not.

After the wife managed to drive the front of the Outlander into the house, I have gone off the idea of paying for a private car and associated insurance...

Timely coincidence that a few pages ago Nissan Leafs/Leaves? we’re mentioned as i’ve decided to swallow a bit more company car tax in lieu of service and repairs of a privately owned dodgem and get she who cannot avoid inanimate objects a nissan leaf with all the crash avoiding and parking accoutrements.

This has bought my little Alfa probably six months for me to get some mileage out of the crisp new mot but naturally, having a range limited electric vehicle means it will be necessary for me to procure a barge for longer family trips in the not too distant future.

Looking forward to having a silent runabout with an absurd amount of electronic gadgetry/buttons to press - I am getting old as the most exciting thing is reacquainting myself with the joys of a heated steering wheel.

Having had 11+ beers on the local pub I haven't read your post properly, you need a l322. Will regret this in the morning no doubt but saw "heated steering wheel" and ignored the rest.

I think I've had or driven most of the cheap hot hatches, and the 1*2 is by far the best.

In non cup form you get lots of amusing toys so they're comfortable enough to tolerate for a day on the motorway. The engine is a cracker and gives the whole car a pantomime feel of a huge lump in a tiny car. Mine is for sale shortly, got to slim down the fleet ready to move house.

If you're on a really tight budget then a 1.7 puma is incredible value, I bought one for 400 quid and ran it for a year spending about 50 quid on tinkering. It had a fabulous gear knob, and the engine is, again, a cracker.

Yes, that one also cropped up on the Jag forum first I think. Sounds interesting even with faults and with LPG, but not at £4,000

I’m not an expert. 172 and 182 are basically the same, as the 182 is heavier. Clio III in general is a very good car, but I’ve not driven a 197 or 200. I imagine they are brilliant. Megane 225 is a great drive and pretty good value now. A bit naffer than a Clio though, IMO.

My 172 doesn’t get used at the moment but when it did it was a fantastic thing really. So lively. Really tactile and responsive and the way it changes line on the throttle made me feel like a much better driver than I am. Excellent fuel economy, but still feels fast, and a great tonal engine that loves being pushed. Cheap parts.

Mine has done 59,000 miles and is unmodified, so is accidentally becoming quite a nice thing, by virtue of most of its brothers and sisters being actively ruined, whilst mine just gets ignored.

I can get very boring about Pumas. Super, super, super things. The FRP is the best FWD I’ve driven, and the normal 1.7 is a terrific thing to drive as well.

The mkI Ka is also a brilliant drive. Miles more fun than expected, or necessary, and I’d choose one over almost anything for an hour’s thrash around the lanes.

Bit bigger, but the late 90’s Primera is also a brilliant chassis, easy to drive hard, and great fun.

So is the mkI Ka while I’m off topic.
