Being subtle doesn't help it at £50k though. If anything, it's too subtle. If you're absolutely minted, dropping £300k plus on a subtle car is a good thing. If you're absolutely minted though, you don't have a 10-year old one.

If you're in the market for as much flash as you can get for £50k, you'd be going for a Bentley, an X5, Q7 etc. - something to "impress the neighbours". You can't impress the neighbours in a Maybach as 99% of people won't have a clue what it is & you don't want to have to explain all the time "based on a Mercedes" etc.

Also, could you even finance one of these?

I hope for the dealers sake they have it on SOR!

At £50k this makes a lot of sense as a wedding hire car. Not many around and would make that £50k back in no time.

Ironically I bumped into a guy at the bike shop this morning that was running a 62. He used it as both family car (two teenagers) but also with a driver to run him around for business.

He paid (I think) £60k for it year ago and was dead happy with it. Had a sit in it, and have to say, the rear is a lovely place to be, crazy comfy.

The only other one I've ever been in was a client of mine that had a chrome wrapped one, again a '62 - took a couple of trips in that, far higher spec, and that was the perfect cabin to munch through 100s of miles - which he did regularly. He's now got a Range Rover, similarly kitted out inside, same chrome wrap.

A long time.

We had a 1959 Silver Cloud as our wedding car. It cost us £300. The Maybach wouldn't get half that.

You may be able to do 2, perhaps 3 weddings per Saturday, and perhaps a couple more during the week. So say 5 wedding a week, £750. That would be pushing a year and a half...of you had that business all year round AND no running costs.

Assume 50% running costs, and a 50% drop off in business away from summer, that would be more like 4-5 years.

Can somebody explain to me why an ex-wedding hire Maybach is worth 2.5x that? No, thought not.

Doubt that will sell for 20 grand either, based on my experience of trying to sell my 2008 CLS at a quarter of that !

The Maybach is based on the W140 chassis. Anyone thinking of buying one as a potential barge should be warned prices are not the same as for a W140. An owner in the US was quoted $22.5k for a new brake booster and $15k for a rebuilt one. $12k for an alternator. I think even by Rolls/Bentley standards that is extremely expensive.

I can't understand why used Maybach residuals are still so high considering the car was a flop, has a poor image and parts prices are sky high. Demand on the used car market must be miniscule given that most people looking for a used prestige car will gravitate towards a used Rolls or Bentley. Yet they seem to command decent values. Though asking and getting are two different things and these cars tend to be on the market for years.

Isn't the chassis based on the W140?

Googling the reg of that black 62 finds more pics of it on a plate-fondler site, platewave.com

And one of the other "similar" pics linked is to a 57 wearing a plate that used to be on the advertised white car...

So that's the shade that's under the wrap. BIG improvement...

Pity the front bumper's a totally different shade, though.
