Think McLarens are massively overhyped. But there's no denying it -- the F1 was / is a masterpiece. Years ahead of its time.

The thing which strike me most, is just how...erm...bland the regular F1's look in that company. Never thought I would think of an F1 as in the inconspicuous choice. biggrin

ETA: The rear view of a P1GTR is just about as incredible as it gets in modern car design. :golfclap:
The F1 has always been quite a clean, un-fussy design, even when new. Actually, a lot of super/hypercars from that era were (ignoring the F40!). It still seemed to be the age of innocence when it came to aero. Being relatively inconspicuous (if that's possible) seems to me to be one of the most enduring appealing aspects of the F1.

When I look at these photos, it just looks to me like the P1 (and this goes for nearly all modern supercars) are just trying way too hard. There never seems to be any underlying shape to hold it all together.

Well not too far from you, Hickstead to Bolney - happy to PM the address!

How did you get on with those cobbled entrance roads?

I agree with Gad Westy - the simple, unadorned look of the original F1 remains timeless and graceful. The blue one - F1JOY - is divine. P1, et al, all look overly fussy to me.

Don't get me wrong - that was not a criticism...hence the smilie at the end. I was simply struck at how subtle it was in the company, given what it is. I just imagined a passer by getting excited and eyes drawn by the GTRs and huge wings and then not noticing the F1 following along behind. Amused me was all. smile

I likely the F1 to the scene in the movie Serenity where Summer Glau kicks the ass of the entire bar. A delicacy, an elegance, a deftness...all whilst tearing off and whipping ass of those around it.

Honestly... from the front wheel centreline backwards on the 720s, I love the shape. It's got some scoops, but they don't protrude. There's a weird channel around the greenhouse, but it's hidden from most angles. It's arguably prettier than the 12C... but then they stuck a face on it that is just trying so hard. That said... the P1-esque face would also have been a bad choice for the rest of that car.

It can't be just me that thinks the F1, in all it's varieties looks a billion miles better than any of the recent stuff to come out of McLaren.

If anything I think they spoil the parade.

I'm rather partial to the Ueno Clinics one. Jay Leno has a nice copy of a painting on the wall of his garage. (it's on the backwall, behind his Rocket)

I remember doing the N'ring in '98, maybe '99, and the Gulf/Davidoff car was there. I was finishing my lap on the straight in a X-flow caterham going flat out at about 100-ish. The F1 came past me travelling at least twce the speed I was. It sounded like when you;re out in the countryside and a jet flies really low overhead. Or lightning strikes almost above you. The ground shakes, you feel the noise in your bones. You try hard not to crap yourself.

The P1 is one hell of a magnificent beast.
