Back in the days where all the kool kidz had a Saxo VTR/S (in blue of course) thanks to Citroen’s free insurance deal.

I had a G-reg Mini City. I wasn’t cool enough. biggrin

You can still buy a manky or thrashed one for banger money. There's a quite clean, unmessed with one on the bay for 1500 quid at the moment. They are a relic of the days when you could still buy a normal car that weighed under a ton, so 120 hp is probably adequate.

Small hot hatches of this era were properly in the front lines back in the late 90s because 17 and 18 year olds could actually get insured on them. They have a reputation for fragility but did get the living shinola thrashed out of them, plus the typical owner could barely afford to put fuel in let alone service them so they weren't exactly well cared for.

You can get a straight-6 Z4 or 325i for the same price.

A Z4 is more of a comfy cruiser and a 325i is a bit of a barge in comparison to a hot-hatch. So, two completely different cars mentioned there.

Unless you mean an 325ti Compact?

£43,000 for a Peugeot 205GTI!? £43. Thousand. Pounds!?!?! Even with all the work on offer to be done to the next buyer?

No. Just..... How?

No.
I came here to say.....well exactly what you did actually hehe

I'm sorry but you would have to be absolutely barking mad to pay even half that for a 205 GTI!

The fact is, it's not meant to be bought to be driven, it's meant to be put in a collection until it does a 205 GTI and rises to stupid prices. It'd be this for me:

I did fancy one of these back in the Max Power days. Just look at that arch gap, no wonder everyone lowered them! Just couldn't get on with that interior though, awful things. Definitely prefer the 106 GTi like many others have stated. Who'd choose this over a Renaultsport though?

Yes that was back in the day when cars also rode well as well as just handled - a lost art in the current era of 20+" rims and slammed suspension.

I'd wager a guess that a Saxo (in good order obviously) would give some much more powerful modern hot hatches a good run for their money....on Britain's crumbling infrastructure

when they were lowered they looked so small that they actually looked like a gokart on the road - so much fun

I think Citroen sold the VTR with free insurance for a while.

At 17, I looked on with jealousy while I pootled (and crashed) around in my Fondmetal wheeled Nova 1.2. Saloon. In brown.

Happy days.

A Clio 172, even in Phase 1 form scores a 4* Euro Ncap rating (properly impressive in the late 90's in any segment). The Saxo scores 2*! It's basically turns in to a plastic bag on impact.

That is the problem for me, now being a proper adult. I couldn't drive my kids in one. I'd drive them around in the Clio though.

Also the VTS got the insurance deal ( at least in 99 ).
I test drove the VTS and the 106GTi.
Bought the VTS as it would have cost over a grand extra to get the nicer interior trim of the 106Gti - wasn't worth it to me

Good grief... and there was me thinking that car enthusiasts would prefer a RWD, straight six saloon or 2-seater convertible over a shopping car.

The Saxo in the OP may be a bit pricey but it would be far more fun to throw down a twisty B-road than either of the BMW's you mention. Both are nice cars in their own right but not exactly the last word in fun.

There's a number of small hot / warm hatches that give similar thrills and can be picked up for shed money

'99-'00 Ford Fiesta Zetec S
Saxo VTR (the cheaper version of the VTS)
Peugeot 106 GTi, or event the Quicksilver
'97-'00 Corsa GSi
Clio 182

Understeer is fun ?
RWD straight-6 cars are a massive amount of fun. I can't see how a shopping car would be any more so.
The BMWs are considerably quicker too.

And also costs a fortune to fix when things go wrong...

It's different strokes for different folks here, clearly.
