To be honest, i read so many reviews about the terrible demise of the hydraulic rack from the Boxster before i bought my 981 that i was fully expecting the electric rack to be utter ste. I
I was referring to the non-linearity more than the EPASness (if that's a word hehe). I think the lack of weight on the nose makes it easier to maintain a respectable amount of feel from the EPAS system (although it is still less feelsome than the 987).

It's still a bloody good car, just one with one (for me) unforgivable flaw. Maybe I'd get used to it if I spent more than a few days in one but as it is I think I'd go for a 986 (with a slush fund for an engine rebuild) instead... shame the latest cars have gone turbocharged four-pot. frown

Watching this with interest as I picked up a 63 plate with 7500 miles on it in August. FPSH, warranty until 2019, Sports exhaust, BOSE but no PASM, which I am not sure is desirable. Certainly doesn't make much of a difference to me.

Not the same spec as the one highlighted but I am not keen on the white inserts compared to mine. Time will tell if the last of the 6 Cylinders become desirable.

This thread is a PH classic.

When 981 was launched PH was full of,
  • Porsche has ruined the Boxster/Cayman
  • Useless gear ratios
  • Chocolate engines
  • Too plush
  • Too wide
  • Too heavy
  • Not sharp enough
  • Poor image
... and now manual 981s are revered as one of the great Porsche sportscars of all time.

I like the sound of this. Not done many miles in this car besides the 120 miles back from the dealer and 320 miles to Scotland and back. I am lucky enough to have a Z4M roadster too and that for me is more fun than the Cayman, even though the Cayman is the better car.

With the Z4 being a third of the price I find it hard to justify the upgrade to the Porsche. If you want a reliable, manual, RWD, there aren't a lot of options south of £40K.

Time will tell if I keep them both.

i think those points remain valid. "ruined" is harsh and inflammatory, but the car has developed in to a Sports GT rather than pure sports car. It's an everyday car now rather than an immersive sports car.

yes The Cayman was obviously never an out-and-out sports car in the vein of an Elise or Caterham but with each successive generation it's got more touring focused. That doesn't make each successive generation worse, just different than the previous one. I'd still take a 986 over the later cars for a thrash down a B-road.

Eeeeeeexactly. And so it goes, time and time again.

Just as it was recently when the 991.2 was released.

And just as it is now with the 718 CS which replaced the 981 CS. The forums are full of;
  • Four cylinder engine, might as well buy a hatchback
  • Too torquey
  • Too laggy
  • Sounds like a Beetle
  • Sounds like a diesel
  • Sounds like a Subaru
  • Sounds like all the above
  • Porsche are cheapening the brand
... and in five years time, there will be a Spotted: 718 Cayman S thread on PH, and it will be thought of as a Porsche classic.

History always repeats.

That's true of all of the current Porsche range other than the GT cars IMO.

Yep, 'cos in five years time the new Cayman will be fitted with a lovely 3-cylinder hybridised 1.0 engine with 400BHP and an exhaust which sounds like a honda lawnmower.

I drove my 981S Boxster 300 miles yesterday and absolutely love it. Sports exhaust on all the time and only a and b roads. Perfect day!

From a NVH / comfort / perception point of view, absolutely. As a drivers' car though, my experience of the successive chassis (both owned and driven on track and road) tells me otherwise, it can still do sports car as well as ever (not that there is a definition of the term) and touring, as it's the breadth of its talent that has grown at either ends of that particular spectrum. I have particularly fond memories of a 981 GTS at the Ring, alongside a fellow PH member. It really didn't feel touring focused.

You two now share the wisdom of 20:20 hindsight!

Back around launch of 981 PH was filled with horror stories about Porsche engines and cmoose was one of the proponents, having blown up his own car IIRC. Example from 2012,

Even today many owners pay through the nose for extended warranty based upon unjustified engine fears.

Fortunately the scare stories proved unfounded and 981 has a solid reputation.

I've certainly never seen anything on here indicating major engine issues on Boxsters/Caymans from the 987.2 onwards.

No me neither only US based customers that have had gearbox issues on the GT4 being manual.

Guess there's always a first though

It's a manual. Finding a 3.4, 981 Cayman with a 6 speed is not easy unless you go for a GTS.

I can't say how much I paid, how much do you think it's worth....lol.

I'm no expert so can only go by the one that's in the classifieds currently with pccb offered at 47.5k
Guess your car has even fewer miles though .personally I'm leaning more towards Pdk these days but that's me
