They weren't a big seller tbh. It always surprised me though as it was basically a better-looking Golf GTI for less cash. It's a subjective thing, i know, but it was an interesting proposition. It's still one of the best looking VW's ever made, IMO.

I've always loved the MK3 Scirocco, which is why i got one. Some of the earlier 2.0 TSI models are really great value now. They definitely don't hold their value that well compared to the equivalent Golf GTI but you can find some bargains.

I'll have a 2.0 TSI GT DSG in Viper Green with the inbuilt sat-nav, leather seats and the 18" wheels if i can find one biggrin

Err... Yes, actually. The marketplace is full of idiots.

When it first came out I expected VW to do the same as VX and basically split the 3 door / 5 door models and drop the 3 door Golf in favour of the Rocco
For one reason or another the customers still chose the 3 door Golf over the Rocco and the Rocco became a very niche product with relatively poor sales.

The 3 door Scirocco was never in a million years going to replace the 3 door Golf.

Boring boring people who want an SUV over a sports car. VW are just following what most people want. Shame though
The article is a bit disingenuous. They're not replacing it with a SUV, they happen to be using its production capacity for a new SUV.

SUVs are brilliant for family use though but I don't think they're being used as sports cars. It's possible to own both.

It’s a shame to see it go, I always liked the look of them. It’s aged well too given that sales began in early 2009.

I wanted to like the Scirocco but I just couldn't with that awkward looking rear. The front looks great. Also the white one pictured hides the awkward rear the best.

Also sad to see it go due to the trend of doing away with 2 and 3 door cars.

well at least Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Renault try.
Exactly that.

VW have such a crushingly dull lack of sporting ambition. They think 'sports' is a re-map and an inch bigger wheels.

Considering the sheer number of models they make (including the wider family of brands) you'd like to think someone important could have had a small rush of blood and come up with an actual coupe (Scirocco is a hatchback) or roadster. Just once?

Outside of Porsche, the cheapest thing they make that could be described as a sports car is the R8. (I think?)

Seems an odd complaint. What would be the point of making a VW sports car when VW is all about being a sober mid-range family car brand, and the same group includes Porsche, and half the point of Porsche (down from 100% a decade or two ago) is being a sports car brand?

The Scirocco in every incarnation from Mark I onwards has never been a sports car: it's been a Golf coupe. Nothing wrong with being a Golf coupe, I like coupes, but it's not a sports car any more than a Manta or Capri was.

It's not a sports car though, it's just another Golf, like the Beetle is (was? I don't know if they axed the beetle too).

The bigger surprise to much of the population was that it was actually still in production.

I gather volumes have been really low for years now and to all intents VW seemed to have given up on development years ago.

A shame really as they were a decent steer, but its no wonder sales were slow when other than a few (minor) tweaks it dates back to 2008.
The thing is that when it came out it was superior to the mk5 Golf it was based on. 6 and 7 came and surpassed it with very little in improvment for the Rocco. I think it's a big shame they haven't done another one, has been a car that has looked dated for a while but that was surely the reason numbers were low, not the concept?

Funnily enough, was pondering with amate whether they were still making them only yesterday, so we have an answer. He had a diesel one, he loved it and I quite liked it but I just cant see past the TT which is better looking to my eye and is more modern, is it simply a cost thing, these never seemed that much cheaper ?

Why don't they make the Golf/Jetta coupe from a few years ago. It looked really smart.

Unfortunately, a large part of it's demise is people opting for a 5 door car.
Its not even just that though. Lack of development have left it being a car thats based on 2.5 generations ago of Golf. Lack of investment = lack of sales and becomes self perpetuating.
Funny, would the average VW buyer know this? I understand even non-car people are likely to research a model they intend to buy, but if you liked the look surely you'd be sold on it. It would be (semi-)interesting to see how many people test drove a Scirocco and a current Golf and plumped for the latter and the reasons why.

My neighbour swapped his Scirocco for a 5dr Golf. The extra 2 doors and extra 1 seat was the only reason.

The 2.0TSi I had 18 months ago was possibly the worst car I have owned in terms of things going wrong on it and it hadn't done a lot of miles either. Whilst I still like the looks of the Scirocco it's put me off VW's now for good. Maybe just a Friday afternoon car?

Just to add....my previous Golf 2.0GT mk5 was possibly the best all rounder I've owned.

I had a 1984 Scirocco GTI. Great car that looked like a coupe, not a 2 door Golf.
Never even remotely attracted by the new one.

Very sad day to hear about this still a great looking car. Its been around a while, after a facelift its based on the Mk5 Golf. Recently there has been some very cheap lease deals and big discounts at the dealers which meant the end was nigh.

I still think this is the best and most interesting car Volkswagen make then again I'm biased as ive had a 1.4tsi for well over 6 years now which has never missed a beat.

The diesel scandal seemed to stop any development of a new model, and the market place seems to be against coupes although the Scirocco was a reasonable seller in the UK. the only I can think of now is the Audi A5 and TT, BMW 2series, Astra GTC also a run out model and the Toyota GT86 which is a slightly different league . VW did talk of a golf CC style of car but this failed to materlise . sadly we will be left with a market of dull SUVs .

If you need space occasionally you can actually get two adults in the back of a Scirocco though, the TT just isn't as practical.

I actually prefer the looks of the VW.
