Not sure why but looking at the rear 3/4 of them makes me think of the Citroen SM in its proportions.
I'm sure that the front isn't actually wider in body or track than a 'normal' car compared to the rear, but I just can't get that slightly kooky look out of my head.
Does that make it a bad car? No. But it clouds my judgement and unlike the SM, I don't think I could bring myself to own one.

I had CRX's in the 90's - great cars for 1 or 2 people. The fully independent double wishbone suspension was amazing, as was the 1.6l engine and VTEC.
The CR-Z sold really well in Japan initially, so there are loads about in RHD - just not many in the UK.
The genuine Mugen RZ was sold in Japan only - just 300 were built. They still attract top prices 5 years later.

I test drove one when they were first introduced, they were $50k (NZ) and just not quick enough, the power delivery was so thin, felt like it needed 100 more horsepower or a $30k price adjustment, the accompanying salesman was embarrassed by it, a lost opportunity by Honda.....
It was neither a Mk1 insight, or a 1.6i 16V VTEC CRX - it tried to be both but failed. Shame.

A colleague had a Civic Hybrid and the battery pack failed, googling it seems a common and expensive failure with those. I guess the other Honda hybrids are better ?

I remember seeing the concept model of the CRZ in white around 9 years ago at the London motor show and thought it looked amazing. At the time, the rumour was that Honda intended to fit the Engine from the Civic Type R, which would have been fantastic ! As I understand, the production model which landed in the showrooms a couple of years later only had the hybrid engine due to the Type R engine no longer being able to meet the strict emissions regulations. My wife loves the styling and really wanted one when we looked for a replacement for the Corsa around 3 years ago. We viewed one at the Honda dealer and found it a frustratingly flawed car. The hybrid engine is slow, and the interior is quite plain, but it looks really really good. We ended up getting a Fiesta ST which offers the driving fun the CRZ should have been able to deliver too !

Looked fast, wasn't fast. Not sure why anyone would buy a 2 seater with such lame performance.
Smart ForTwo, Fiat X1/9, Mazda MX-5, Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappucino?

What have I missed?

Smart For Two never looked fast to me! laugh

Fiat X1/9 was an early 70s car - in that context it wasn't slow!

Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappucino were both Japanese "kei cars" so built to specific regulations applying in their homeland. rolleyes

I test drove one of these in 2012 and thought it was a blast - it really reminded me of my EG civics in the way it drove - which is praise indeed.

The 3D dash is a fab thing and I loved how pushing the sport button made the whole car feel like it tightened up. No - not fast at all, but good fun I thought.

I then found I wasn't allowed one as a company car and ended up with a diesel astra. In grey. Thank goodness for the S2000 that I was hoping the CR-Z would partner at the time.

Me either, maybe he meant the Smart Roadster. Mine Roadster felt far more sporty than the CRX.

How does it work being a hybrid and a manual at the same time? I read somewhere that that combination doesn’t mix, how would it work, say you’re doing a hillstart, how would you know where the biting point is, when does the engine kick in??
The petrol engine runs all the time. The electric is either charging batteries on overrun or adding to the petrol power when needed.
Google Honda IMA (Integrated Motor Assist). Essentially a 13 hp motor that is built into the fly wheel. It can never operate independent of the engine, it is literally there to fill in torque during acceleration and recoup energy under engine braking.

To be fair, they were barely usable and the US market didn't even bother with them. You got two vaguely seat-shaped storage trays instead:

I rather wanted one of these at the time, pre-kids - had they done it as an auto (because if you spend enough time in traffic to want a hybrid, you want an auto) I might have bought one.
Yep I think I remember someone telling me they only put the rear seats in for insurance purposes.
Very good car for urban use if you don't mind the gearbox. Pretty terrible refinement on the motorway though, which is the only reason I didn't buy one.

I have owned one for four years. It was my first car since passing my test and I can honestly say it's fantastic. You get a lot of admiration from people who love the look of the car, it's just so different from everything else on the road. Speed is an issue, you have to pop it in sport and rev the nuts off it and because of that it's also not the economical, i average about 40mpg. I can honestly recommend it to anyone who wants an alternative to the dreary designed cars of today (although I did add some bigger alloys to fill out the wheel arches, the gap was too big from stock). Now I'm 25 I am looking for something quicker and fun so I'll probably get a Toyota GT86.

Still get ideas about moving on from my Mk1 Insight to this as a half way to a DC2, guess master of neither offering the trade.

I drove one on launch week and remember thinking the road noise was poor. Seems that was an issue for many and rust is concerns is an issue (been spoilt by an ally car - although that’s bubbling in places)

Hmmm. Still watching the market for a white/ red leather one or a cheap facelift with the lithium batteries and slight power boost.

I once ejaculated over the mush of a pneumatic nineteen year old over the bonnet of one of these. It was a deep blue colour and ever since the car has had a place in my heart.

How easy is a k20 conversion on one of these?

Boning an inflatable doll over a car bonnet is a bit weird.

I think people were hoping for a modern day CRX but didn't get it.
