Everything seems to point to it being a S500 (it says body altered for AMG Wheels on the data card, but that's all.....now to work out why it would be registered by MB as a S55 AMG ....it was registered June '99, so quite early on.

Perhaps it was registered incorrectly by the importer/DVLA when brought in from Brunei? I know that the DLVA aren't the best at V5 document accuracy at the best of times, but they can be really bad when it comes to imports.

Just tracked down the original owner....and he says;

"I bought it new as a S55AMG from William Loughnan in Preston - To avoid a long wait when they first came out

In fact I think it was a S500 and they fitted all the kit on it to make it into a S55 AMG"

In fact as far as I can see they put AMG Wheels and badges on.....presume they charged a healthy premium for this, and the guy wasn't too fussed, or didn't know it should have a completely different engine !

I also got an email from MB in Brunei, saying it was ordered and sold by them as an S500, but delivered to the UK.

So know we know.....sometimes the internet is useful !

Anyway all of this MB research has put be on the search for a W221 to replace my 10 year old XJ8 ...

Yours I assume? Looks good. There was a black one for sale in Poole near me a little while back I went to look at it twice with a view to upgrading from my W211 E63 AMG. Then we moved house and those plans got shelved.

Black is definitely the best colour. Values seem to be all over the place. I've seen a few at around 15k on AT and at Historics auctions. The one near me started at 24k and I think went down to about 18.5k when it sold. There was one very recently on ebay at 23.5k and that seems to have gone quite quick.

The one by me sometime ago was allegedly owned by Prince Naseems brother, looking through the history I saw an MB invoice for something like 7k for full suspension change. Ouch.
