I own two cars, and I drove them both in the current ULEZ this weekend just passed.
You didn’t, because it only came into effect on Monday.
It was a simple point of principle, to demonstrate my view.

Unless you want to reduce this to an argument of semantics, because you've run out of alternatives?

I could do the same this weekend, and it would be absolutely fine.

The inclusion of "young timer" classic petrol cars and bikes really pisses me off.
Clearly these few usually well maintained vehicles make no measurable difference to London's air quality.

What can you do though ...middle aged/class probably white air cooled Porsche owner versus telegenic choking poor kid,

That's the"optics" battle we are never going to win.
My argument throughout - gesture politics, lapped up by the woke hard-of-thinking.

Look at the major source of NO2 in the DEFRA chart up the thread, compare with the huge reduction in pollution observed when the buses using Putney High Street were cleaned up. Car traffic didn’t change at all.

And time after time those in opposition can't seem to pinpoint a single failing in the policy, other than it feeling a bit unfair to car owners (the tiny minority).

On the subject of buses, it's all part of the same plan/process: https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/environment/p...

Indeed - in a car you bought in full knowledge of it being in the most polluting band possible to use. Your argument is bankrupt.

laugh

Your argument is reduced to complaining about my ULEZ-compliant second car (remember the hybrid I also bought?).

That's when you know you're struggling and scraping the barrel.

Can you identify on the chart what is and what isn’t a big problem?

It simply evidences your incredibly sanctimonious hypocrisy.

Or your desperation to be right in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Either way.

I presume also its cameras recording number plates. But the scale is huge, and you need to consider issues such as roads which are dead ends/cul-de-sacs that go out onto the north and south circular roads but are inside the zone. It would make no sense at all to camera these roads, some literally go inside the zone 50 metres then come to an end with a handful of houses on them, it would not be proper to charge these cars just to leave the end of their road each time they are used. I imagine we have plenty of debate to come on this at a council and political level before its finally decided on how it works.
Nonsense, they'll all be dragged in and it'll be £12.50 per day to take the car to the end of the road. The consultation was majority in favour you know, so that's the end of it.

[/socially just local politician]
I contacted my local Councillors about things like this and the fact that they put vital local facilities inside the zone i.e. recycling just to see what the response was they said these details are being discussed at council meetings and subsequently with those administering the ULEZ. That was about 2 months back, so maybe those discussions have been closed down, I am not sure. Unless you have evidence to the contrary that says otherwise?

He was either going to pull this or "snowflake" out eventually. It was only a matter of time.

Name-calling is what generally happens when people run out of valid arguments to debate.

Laughable.

My argument has been clear from the beginning - targeting private cars is populist money-grubbing that can’t possibly have the effect on pollution levels which is being inferred. That much is clear from the government’s own published scientific research.

Not everyone gets some self-righteous kick out of being told what to do.

All those who live and work in London and think the transport infrastructure is good ... I fear that is because your frame of reference is f**ked! I moved from Manchester to London a couple of years and in absolute terms it's utterly st! Gone now thankfully although was working there today and it's still utterly st! HTH biggrin

I asked the leader of the council about it face to face during the 20mph pr exercise, he seemed to admit there was a problem but didn't seem very confident of getting any change. It doesn't help of course that there are hundreds of luxury flats on the same 100 yd long road.

The 20mph limit is going to happen, its imminent everything voted through and public consultation done, the ULEZ still has plenty time to go and still has scope for refinement, is what I have been effectively told by three councillors I was speaking with.

It seems pretty sensible that if you have a 30m long dead end road on one side of the south circular for instance that goes into the zone that they simply do not put a camera at the end of that road. To be honest if you want to reduce pollution focus on behaviours, switching cars off when queuing at level crossings, outside schools, better use and knowledge of buses, car sharing capabilities, fit for purpose bike lanes so on and so forth.

Credit where it's due, you're like a Bloodhound for any thread about London transport.

And every time, it's like a broken record, reaching for some hilarious justification for why it's terrible.

And I can't even dignify the comparison to Manchester with a reply. It's just hilarious.

I don't usually post much but I this is something that has really irritated me. I now have to change my route to get to my gf which is absolutely ridiculous. In 2021 I won't even be able to drive where I currently live. The ULEZ is the last straw for me in terms of living in London - I already can't park where I live and of course everywhere is full of speed cameras. So, I've decided to move down south to a place with parking right outside the house!

Good for you, I have already said to my OH that if charging comes to my area we will be moving away from it.
