Always been partial to them since a neighbour's son turned up in an orange one in the early '70s, one Sunday morning, it looked like something from outer space. Still fancy one now, not at the top of 'the list' but definitely on it!
This must have been the earliest appearance of a 914 in a TV series - Deborah Grant (probably better known as Jim Bergerac's ex- wife) drove a RHD example in an episode of UFO called 'Psychobombs', shot in late '69 / early '70 I think...
If you think the Jones's are going to be impressed with that thing then you either have neighbours with no interest whatsoever in cars idea or they will know it's not a proper Porsche in the 911 sense & your feeble efforts to impress will leave them laughing. I chuckled when it was launched as it so obviously a VW with a Porsche badge. it fooled nobody.
Sometimes in life if you can't do something properly or afford the proper thing do nothing. For example if you can't afford the Bahamas don't try & make out Benidorm is as good.

What sort of saddo buys a car to impress the neighbours anyway?
The first car I bought was a 914 2.0-litre. Fuel injected. Hadn't run in 10 years. After towing it home, a mate and I worked and worked to get it started.
It caught fire. We had to beat the flames with our shirts and coats.
I kept it several years and did many thousands of miles, including long-distance road trips.
The 2.0-litre is good for 100hp from the factory. Weighs about 900 kg
Swap the fuel injection for carburetors and a cam -- and you can make prodigious amounts of power. With the large-displacement four-cylinder drumming behind your head, you cannot not have fun in this car, even when stock. Stab the accelerator and you hear -- whump! -- the intake manifold opens up and air rushes in.
Good examples can be had for less than half the price quoted for this white example, above. At least, in the US. That's cheap enough to pay for your airfare and for shipping the car to Blighty.
On the white car above, the wheels have been painted white (OEM is unpainted, polished metal). Also, the C-pillar has been painted white (the OEM C-pillar is covered in black vinyl to match the black targa top). The front running lamps are two-toned white and amber, as per European spec. The US spec is one colour: all-amber.

This is the one to have (or the same engine in a 911E) Without spending a fortune they are good for over 200bhp NA and over 8000 rpm. Though a good exhaust is essential to do this.The 2.0-litre is good for 100hp from the factory. Weighs about 900 kg

They are lighter than the 914/6s and handle a lot better.

If the broadcast date of 30 December 1970 is correct, this car would have been less than 12 months old and, consequently, something of a novelty in mass media.
