Funny but true story, I went with a very good friend of mine into a BMW dealership, he was looking to order a 535d mSport for his wife.
We were both dressed in scruffs as we had been doing some dirty work (!!) and got treated appropriately.
A bit like the scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts returns to the posh shop and tells them what huge mistake they'd made, we returned later in his Bentley Arnage.
They fell over themselves to welcome him until he told them to go forth and multiply in his broad London accent..
But if you turned up filthy, I can hardly say I blame them for treating you that way...
Why? Is it etiquette to get dressed up to go and spend £50k+ on a car? It's not like these people looking down their noses could afford most of the cars they're selling.
No, not dressed up, but it could be considered bad manners to go dressed like a dirty vagrant....sitting in brand new showroom cars...

Exactly, turn up filthy anywhere and you will be likely to be less welcome. It's a manners thing.

A friend used to sell BMWs and she would always target the scruffy ones as opposed the punters in suits. She sold more than the other sales people.

I suspect these will need to be heavily discounted when you consider some of the rivals

S8 plus lists at £100k available for £80k
M760Li lists at £135k available for £102k
They are heavily discounted. I got offered a LWB diesel Autobiography (everything as standard) list price £83k for 65k cash or 60k on finance. Similar deal on the XJR

If I was going to buy such a car the Jag would be my choice much more character than the competition.

I have to say I love the current XJ design and glad they broke away from tradition (apart from those black C pillar bits) but I am wondering if I am the only one that thinks it doesn’t suit the R treatment and the sports seats look out of place along with the lairy paint and external additions? To me an XJ should be black and glide along silently looking menacing and when it stops you don’t know if a celebrity is about to step out onto the red carpet or a villain spray you with bullets.

For what it's worth I have done over 60k miles in my supersport and did the same in my xfr before, I borrowed a 380 bhp f-type for the weekend and it felt gutless after the torque of the big v8, doesn't matter what the numbers say.

In the same vein I test drove a new m3 2 days ago, feels like it would be mighty fast when your on it, my jag feels mighty fast all the time......

That red "575" stitching on the seats is gash. In fact most of the changes are pretty tasteless compared to the launch model Supersport, including the OTT diamond quilting on the seats.

Jaguar seem to have a habit of releasing a decent enough looking car and then tacking more and more tasteless st to it as it gets older until it looks absolutely tragic. They did it with both the X100 and X150 XK, and the last XJ started off ugly and they just made it worse. I think the only one they actually improved over time was the S-Type.
I agree. The small diamond stitching is ghastly compared to the older seats.

They did the same with the XK at the end and fitted those diamond stitched sports seatbthat were totally out of character with a luxury GT.

I took my 12 month old Nissan GT-R for a service and asked to try a Nissan Leaf as a loan car. On the way back I called in at the Porsche dealership. I was totally ignored even when I expressed some interest.

I’ve not looked at a Porsche since.

The most customer accepting dealership I’ve visited is Bentley. They sold me one!

If this were a TV series, then Jaguar would be like the TV series 'Shameless' compared to the Audi/BMW/Mercedes 'Real Hollywood Wives'
There's a distinct lack of cachet for me, too much Ripspeed catalogue, too little class.
This comment has me so confused.

Are you in some way implying that Real Hollywood Wives is classy?

So this is lighter and more powerful than the Lexus LC500 GT car reviewed on the other thread. That's good going from Jag.

What people forget is how well designed this car is under the skin, chassis and monocoque design well ahead of the competition even now.

Initial point - Jaguar no longer have performance saloons, but could so easily have. Sir William would be shuddering.
On what planet is a full sized saloon that does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and tops out at over 150mph not a ‘performance saloon’? Ffs, the XF-S is perfectly comparable to its equivalents from other brands.

Yes, they don’t have an absolute top end car in the M5/E63 vein, but they don’t pretend to either. Mainly because they’d sell bugger all and they know it.

I’d prefer a Jaguar that exists and produces good cars that people want to buy, than one that went bust trying to fully some past dream that never really existed anyway. Lyons would have built SUVs if those are the ‘sports cars’ that would have sold at the time.

I imagine your car is lovely. I actually think these XJs make wonderful luxury cars and I’m not sure the loud / sporty versions are as compelling. Refined, beautiful interior, swift and effortless progress are what these are about to me.

Jaguar have certainly nailed the footballers' WAGs car market with this one.
When have you ever seen a WAG driving one of these? Usually it's some kind of SUV with drug dealer wheels and a naff bodykit.

That's also 500/550bhp Vs 380bhp.

My last car had 370bhp and 530lb/ft torque. Current car has 510bhp and 450lb/ft. New car is a whole world faster and made the old car feel gutless.

Because the rest of the world has moved on, twice, whilst jaguar has moved backwards.

That they don't even try to compete with the other brands is a crying shame....THAT is why Sir William would be shuddering.

Agreed. The success is great but Land Rover are by far the dominant partner and outselling Jaguar by around 4-1
