You're not driving while you are stationary so therefore should be in neutral. It's the same for manual or automatics. Take the car out of gear and use the hand brake. By all means have your foot over the clutch and accelerator pedals ready to go but never have the car in gear. Even if the handbrake works perfectly and stalls the engine should your foot be knocked off the clutch pedal there's still a risk you will move more than without being in gear. Use the amber and red light phase to depress the clutch and engage the gear ready to go when the light turns green. After all that's what the amber and red phase is for.

No, you're probably more likely to be hit if the vehicle behind is dazzled by your million candle power cre-LED brake lights. wink

If you can't keep your feet on the pedals you shouldn't be driving.

If you're so worried about an accident occurring that would dislodge your feet perhaps you should mitigate against all the other equally unlikely things that could happen. A good start would be to never drive a manual car so you can retain two hands on the steering wheel at all times, just in case.

WHAT??? Are you stuck in 1950?? Or you entering for the winner for today??

I have never used neutral in any automatic, and use park when the car is, well, parked.

When and what kind of car did you learn how to drive in? I'm guessing something that predates the Cadillac Type 53 or Austin 7

The only pedal you need control of at all times is the accelerator.

Next time you're in a manual car look to the left of the clutch there might be a little plastic pad for you to rest your left foot on because you are not supposed to leave your foot on the clutch. Look for it again next time you're in an automatic as well because you're not really supposed to use your left foot at all.

Even if you have developed a good left foot stop, right foot go technique you certainly should not have your foot on the brake pedal all the time. silly

Obviously I meant "keep your feet on the pedals when necessary".

Perhaps you were dazzled by my post. You might want to turn your screen off and put your device in standby.

Didn't realise the whole brake light thing was so polarising. I didn't say I found it blinding (It's not like I'm just staring at them deliberately), just annoying.

More pathetic than coming into the thread, which was created for this reason to unfairly judge and insult someone? Yeah ok smile.

People who can't turn into a junction without cutting the end of your lane off, no road sense or consideration. I had some silly woman screaming at me for nearly hitting her this morning, hanging out her window in front of a tesco at 745am screaming that im a prick.

I was stationary at the time.

I get bonus PH points for remembering the Cadillac and Austin 7 surely? wink

Okay back on topic.

I think we have established there are only two types of people who sit with their foot on the brake pedal at junctions, roundabouts or traffic lights.

1/ Those who are incapable. Left arm amputees for example or simply lack any higher brain function.
2/ Those who are inconsiderate.

Incapable or inconsiderate sitting with your foot on the brake pedal is as useful to other road users as having your front fog lights on at all times.

Next time I see it instead of thinking...

"What a pillock I should get out and show that person how to use a handbrake with their face".

...I'll should think...

"Awww! That driver only has one arm. Bless. If they lost that arm during military service; thank you".

...or simply...

"There's an idiot. I'd better give them more space".

Coincidentally I have observed that those who fail to us their handbrake at junctions tend to also fail to use any indicators which opens a new debate...

"Should drivers be retested every five years?"

People in traffic queues, at lights, junctions etc. who keep the brake pedal depressed. Really annoying especially this time of year having bright brake lights shining in your face - especially from SUV's. Haven't people heard of handbrakes ?
I'm with you on this one, too many hours on CAD, I've been annoyed by the "brake lights in a queue" for 30 years. However in a queue I often leave my foot on the pedal until there's another car behind me.

That advice is wrong. If you are in drive and have your foot on the brake should you be hit from the side or behind with enough force to knock your foot from the brake pedal your car will coast into another collision.

The brief time I have owned or had to drive automatics I always used neutral and the handbrake. It took a fraction of a second longer to set off than with a manual but that's the sacrifice for not driving a proper car.
I'm with you on this one as well, where are we?
Was taught that at a stop it's handbrake on and out of gear. Then if I'm hit and my feet come off the pedals the car won't move under it's own power.
But there again, I was taught to drive when cars needed more driver input and driving was considered a skill to be honed, not the right of every lazy twunt.

The same as rear fog lights. This morning there were patches of visibility less than sixty metes so I was using mine while there was nothing behind me. As soon as I could see headlights/fog lights in my mirrors I turned my rear fog lights off so's not to dazzle those behind.

Quite a few overtook me with their rear fog light still on (I was doing 70 on a dual carriageway) some people just aren't as considerate as others.

LK, you seem to be the most considerate of drivers, a credit to us all and upholding the honour of us PH'ers smile

Our plumber. Delay after delay getting him out to service our boiler. His wife has had a baby, he's been ill, fair enough. That said we've had to chase him and then some. To top it all off he was appointed to get here for 8am today. We've just text him to ask where he is, 'Hi Sarah, I'll have to make it this evening if that's OK'.

No, it's not OK. You were happy to take our £3000 for a boiler install last year, and were punctual, knowing it's payday. Our boiler is overdue a service (which is a warranty term) and my wife has taken the morning off. Last but not least I got up at 7am in preparation for you attending, having not slept well last night.

fking prick!

Yet another PHer receiving a kicking for expressing an opinion. If you disagree with said opinion then at least put forward your own views in response. Ranting insults achieves nothing. So what do you think Mr. Trump?

2 for the price of 1 this morning wobble

Firstly to the Mk1 Focus - yes, I was driving in the middle of the road, which meant you couldn't overtake even though you clearly wanted to. And I know it was a long straight stretch of road with nothing coming the other way. But guess what, it was also a single track road, which means I can't really move over as the edge is littered with potholes, and even if I did there's still not enough room to pass safely. Not only that, but there was also a crappy old Berlingo in front of me, although I'll grant you the benefit of the doubt and say you might not have been able to see them as they decided that lights weren't required at 7.30am. But you surely can't have missed the bus in front of that, which definitely took up the whole fking road so there was certainly no way past that.

Knob number 2 goes to the Berlingo in front of me. Bus turns off and a few minutes later the road opens up. Mrs Berlingo decides 40 in a NSL is plenty, so as I go for a nice safe overtake she decides to veer across the road in front of me. fking . And turn your bloody lights on!!! banghead
