I would be more impressed if it was wheel driven rather than just a rocket on wheels. Such a vehicle would have more credibility & be worthy of being spoken about in the same breath as that of a Mr Campbell & others.

It might impress you more but it wouldn't be anything like as fast. There's absolutely no possibility of delivering the required power for 1000 mph through the wheels on a salt lake surface. The jet engine alone is the equivalent of 135,000 hp , and that's before you even think about the rockets.

This is definitely "Cool Britannia" with some help from a few friends abroad.

I remember going to a presentation organised by The Midland Automobile Club a few years ago where one of the engineers who is a lady stood and talked to us - it was truly inspirational. I sincerely hope they not only achieve what they set out to do, but also raise the record a little further as well thumbup

I found a few interesting facts about Hakskeen Pan yesterday. For a lake to be called a salt lake, at least 2 percent salt content and Hakskeen Pan has a salt content of around 2.1 percent. When they put the stones that were on the track to the side of he track they found that Kudu would go up the piles of stones to look for prey. That wasn't the sort of information I even thought about yet found it interesting to hear about the non engineering side of Bloodhound.

I have to say that I don't follow your logic on this one. The car is the most advanced land speed vehicle ever produced - and you are mentioning it like it's easy - 'just a rocket on wheels'?

Additionally the current fastest speed for a car with driven wheels is 458 mph ('wheel driven' isn't a record in its own right, but there are specific variations on classes for piston and gas turbine engines, which necessarily have to be wheel driven by their nature). 1000 mph just isn't remotely on the cards.

Saw it on Saturday - amazing, amazing machine. very, very tempted to go watch it do the real deal.

Another fun fact about Haskeen Pan is that over the tracks 12 mile length, there is a total variance in height of 20 cm.

That is astonishing.

I thought the post a little odd too. I was there Thursday. Great to see the car run trouble-free but not surprised...they’ve run it several times before...that engine is a well lifed unit. Richard dropped a hint to me that there are some big deals in the offing and I’m 100% sure the public runs were totally essential to close those deals. I’m incredibly proud of what they are doing and having worked with Richard, Jo and several others at events the total enthusiasm throughout the team is infectious. The dummy car is bloody heavy though!

Hopefully it gets funded again. Would seem like a real shame to not at least increase record even if it doesn't get to 1000mph.

Big part of the project was the education side. As an engineer I wouldn't recommend it as a career mind you!

Its a massive shame but I will be very surprised if they can bounce back from this. When the two most successful British F1 teams in history can't get a title sponsor for events that happen every two weeks, twenty times a year with a massive guaranteed worldwide audience what hope does this project which might happen once have when it might not even be shown on mainstream TV?

I hope I am wrong. : (

I would think this is the sort of thing Red Bull like to sponsor. Paint their logo all over it. Claim credit when it reaches 1000mph.
The financial justification could be the next generation of young people who will always associate the brand with the Bloodhound SSC.

Or Branson and Virgin - they could use the tech for their trains......
