i don't think mr whippy was referring to expensive cars, but fun ones.
i agree with him. MX5, SSS, Cooper S, lot of lighter hatches from a decade or more ago going for a steal.
put image and ego behind and there's a lot of fun out there.
I've had a Madza Eunos for nearly ten years now. Cost peanuts, worth peanuts, just spend a few hundred quid a year on keeping it going. Huge fun, I don't understand why everybody doesn't have one.i agree with him. MX5, SSS, Cooper S, lot of lighter hatches from a decade or more ago going for a steal.

Probably because they're slow ( what's fun about being out- accelerated by 1.6 tdi Fiestas?), even through the twisties, when 95% of the time you'll be on faster roads and you really will be out-gunned!Alright for cruising around with the top down ( if that's your thing-its not mine and I didn't like the car, as a result) but frustrating everywhere else!

So what? It's not a race - it's about having fun at sensible license-retaining speeds. oceanview said:

I've enjoyed driving underpowered cars, you need planning, observation and driving skill more. There is a real sense of fun in driving a slow car quickly. Anyone can drive a fast car fast.Alright for cruising around with the top down ( if that's your thing-its not mine and I didn't like the car, as a result) but frustrating everywhere else!
I bought a used car five years ago, making sure it was the least powerful of the lot. It is only 135 bhp, has an automatic box, and is boring as hell. But we talk about the need for a powerful car, and I see no need at all. I'd like you to look at these statistics on a run from Alicante to home. Really, would your car do better? Really?

I see the MX5 drivers have responded!
I've never owned one. I just thought your talk of being "out gunned" made you sound like a boy racer.

I still think they're pants!!
Nothing wrong with that. That's why there are so many different cars to choose from. I wouldn't judge you for not owning one, just like I wouldn't judge someone for owning one. I wonder why you do?...which is fine. Everyone likes different things.
What would be nice for once is for PH not to descend into a slanging match because people find fun in different types of car.
Personally I prefer a characterful powertrain (ideally inc. a sweet manual 'box) when I'm driving. The actual pace is less relevant to me than the act of being 'at one' with the car...but not to the n'th degree - I don't think I'd have the patience for an OLD classic - unassisted brakes and non-synchro gears would frustrate me more than engage me.

I take back my statement about this month's Evo issue-got further through and there's some good articles about the new Fiesta ST, a lovely piece about the demise of the Impreza and an interesting piece which struck very close to home, comparing a GT86 (new) with an Exige (used).
There's a theme through these pieces. All the cars featured are attainable, real world that normal people can afford. Keep it coming, Evo, and you might just be alright.

Yes, as you said yourself, your car is "boring as hell" - I don't think mine is , so you might as well caught the bus!
Care to let us know what wonderful car is in your garage. Like so many posters on PH who troll a particular car and the people who speak up for it, largely based on arguments which are flawed (no 1.6 TDI Fiesta is going to outgun an MX-5 - even the original 1.6..).... you do not divulge what cars are in your garage. Fair enough you don't like it but to dismiss it as "pants" is nothing but trolling.Back on topic.... pleased to see an EVO featuring cheaper cars...I enjoyed last month's too...thought the Civic Type R was lucky to beat the Megane.... Just 0.4 secs quicker on track, despite the 36BHP power advantage!!
As for classic cars....don't despair, buy an emerging popular classic..... lets face it our roads are so congested and full of speed cameras a really fast car is an irrelevance. I'm enjoying rattling around in an old Mk1 Ford Ka I've bought for my daughter. floats over the bumps, flies through roundabouts and all it at no more than 45-50MPH!! If a Ka is too slow (and frankly it is on any sort of fast road), just buy an old Puma or a Clio 182. Cheap as chips and more than enough grunt to be fun on a B road.

I am guessing at a Z4 coupe.
I’ve never got the obsession of the Coupe as the Roadster is just as nice with the roof up, and adds an entirely new dimension with it down.Fair enough if you want the bigger boot or the rarity, or hate roof down driving etc.
But from my view the Roadster is just as good for road driving thrills, but cheaper.
Also you get to hear the noise better, and nice for catching the sun in summer!
He is in some digital media project . The grapevine tells me he was made an attractive financial offer he couldn't refuse . He brought some good ideas to Motor Sport , as well as some not so good ones.
Judge Joe Dunn by what he writes, not on the podcasts, which have always been endearingly shambolic . I think he's an ex Times guy, and he writes well. That should be a given, of course , but some other motoring journalists are strangers to both grammar and syntax. If it was up to me I would impose a 1 grand fine for every 'likely' instead of 'probably ' , the same for 'met with' and 'inside of ' instead of 'met' and 'inside ' , increasing to 5 grand for 'sat ' instead of 'sitting'....

My son had a 3 litre roadster, lovely engine, er lovely engine, but that ride and interior I could not live with. The only redeeming feature of the coupe is that it is a better all year round car with a lovely engine, and er a lovely engine.
The Coupe had a much better chassis; stiffer shell allowed them to retune it. Ditch runflats and it was a proper fun thing. Not sophisticated in a Cayman sense, but a lot of fun - and it looks great, especially rear 3/4.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
