I'd also be interested to know why you can't tow in them either!
Because VW never submitted or tested them for towing homologation. It's not illegal to fit them with a towbar, so you could have one for bike rack purposes for example, you'd just be in bother if you got caught dragging a trailer or caravan.

Didn't realise that the Golf R exhausts were quite so obviously just trim additions
Only on the MK7 estate, weirdly. All other variants, including MK7.5 estate, are fully hooked up.

So with upgrades and a few vital options/extras - we now have a Golf hatch which will cost well in excess of £40K! Really!! Getting into Porsche territory.

Really?

Entry level 718 Cayman with all options ticked that the Golf has standard comes in at £ 54,590.00.

Golf DSG with performance pack is 36,975

So the golf is £17k cheaper and quicker.

Terrible value.

And ferries a family of four around in comfort. What a daft comparison.

Anything German and performance orientated is crazy money these days.

If we're bashing VW for sprinkling some pricey parts onto the R, then we ought to be equally cynical about BMW's pricing of the M3 CS. +£25K more than the normal M3, for: +10hp, derestriction and some carbon bits.

Folk like to say "£40K for a 'Golf'". But how does "£100K (with options) for a '3 series BMW'" sit any better? It's a 3 series with a big engine and suspension work. No different in approach to the Golf R.

But the real question is: Where are people getting their money from, plus expensive hop ups on top??

Let’s face it though, people complain that it doesn’t make enough noise, people complain it makes too much noise. Can’t win.

Personally love the way mine is loosening up and popping on the overrun or on downshifts.
Fair point it's a no win. And overall it's a great car so sound effects can be lived with.

How the Spielberg wheels are considered a 'performance' wheel is beyond me. They're heavier than the Pretoria for a start. Also why are the Pretoria wheels are in all the 'performance pack' marketing images?

The Clubsport discs aren't any better on track than the normal brakes unless you swap out the lines and fluid which is sub par on the R's.

I can understand the pricing for the exhaust as it's an Akrapovic other than that, the pack seems like a waste of money.

The guy who has the tow bar on the wagon, how? Golf R are not type approved for tow bars so surely thats illegal and 'dangerous' according to DVSA no?

I HATE the sound of these twin clutch fart boxes and an Akropovic exhaust won't help things. All I hear on the streets is FART, FART, FART, FART, FART while some idiot flaps his way through all the gears to 30mph in the most antisocial way possible. A class AMG is another culprit too.
Totally agree with this , very poor sounding almost irritating ,sounds stupid so I bought the manual R without the FART gearbox . It's not a nice sounding accelerating car , which is weird as it should be .

It’s not an exhaust, it’s acrapovic, each letter is worth at least 100 quid on its own.

Is the Akrapovic exhaust switchable on/off? I think these types of exhausts are the best all-round solution. As enthusiastic petrol/pistonheads surely the noise that we get to hear from our cars is important to us? Of course, it's better if it's not manufactured as such, but isn't that what manufacturers do anyway with their exhaust systems? Ti Akrapovic exhausts are actually a thing of beauty, where one can admire things like the welding, the reduction in weight and the appearance of the thing. £3k is a lot of money but it's an option I would be very tempted to tick were I to buy one.

As a Scirocco R driver, this PP equipped Golf R is right on my radar. I think it looks great and will go great. I've always thought the Golf's are the best real world cars on sale.
You don’t even see it. The weight reduction on a road going car is absolutely useless. But yes, it’s a famous name, so that’s what you are purchasing, a rub for your ego, but in the end it is still a Golf.

I wasn't really bothered about the Golf R but recently I'm starting to like them. They seem like a good all rounder like some other people are saying.

Probably worth ten times as much when you use the right letters, then.

Quite easy to build one without the body kit.

Stage 2 file, decent intake, turbo intake pipe, decent flowing exhaust, stronger DV.

My Cupra last rolling roaded at 420ps following a file ugprade running 99ron. Previously had made 370-390 on numerous different files.

....annnndddd the upgraded brakes....annnddd the upgraded turbo charger.......

even when you have done all that you are still faced with the real proposition of having the engine forged so it does not pop its clogs prematurely.

hopefully VW will place the new TTRS engine into the Golf and give the market what it wants smile

Nah I've seen stage 3 and 4 cars running 500+ with stock engines.

I've been running over 400 for 3.5 years on the OEM turbo charger (I also have the "weak" N revision turbo which is prone to fail)
